Does anyone here have any exp. on the turn pro gear head band saw. Enco has them for $400 off with free shipping. Im thinking about getting one. Your thoughts?

I have a turn pro gear head band saw. I got a similar saw for the shop at work, but with the cheaper belt drive. I like the cheaper saw better.

The advantage of the transmission is you can change speed with the flick of a lever. The problem is the backlash in the crappy transmission makes it noisy and rough.

I'd get the belt and just leave it in mid range...

which one? I have a turn-pro 7x12 gear drive. put up a link and i'll see if it's the same one.

That's the one I got last spring for about the same price. Get 2 gallons of the coolant. It drips all over when cutting stuff.
In a nut shell, it's a great saw. I grabbed stuff just to cut with it the first day. It is very much like the cheap 4x6 import band saw except it is scaled up. You can use it upright and it comes with an bolt on table for using it vertically that is very much like the small one. The table is flimsy and cheap, just like the 4x6. I leave it on medium speed and have never moved it, pretty much like the 4x6.
Cutting things with the coolant is great. It keeps the blade sharp much longer. It does tend to splatter or dribble around. I ended up adding a some water. I'll have to drain it soon for winter I suppose.
It flat cuts stuff quick in horizontal mode. In vertical mode it will cut but the 3/4" wide blade isn't as flexible as the 4x6 so you have to do a lot of relief cuts. I hate wasting a lot of expensive knife steel so I use the big one for cut off's when I can and the little one for profile cutting. I bought mine more for metal work in general and not so much for knives and it works great for that. For just knives, I'd stick with the smaller 4x6 and the 1/2" blade so you can profile with out so much waste.
