ok, i have a twitch 2, great little knife but i think the spring mechanism is gunked up a little (the blade is hard to deploy all the way some times lately. is it hard to clean out that mechanism with out screwing it up?

and if it is pretty easy what is the size of the torx i need, looks like it is a tinny little thing

thanks

twitch 2 was my first nice knife my father engraved the blade and gave to me for graduation. i soon found out that the twitch 2 is not in any way a suitable work knife. all i did was cut tape and after 2 months the spring was completely stuck. i used a small allen wrench to take the bolt off. you can make them fit. however once i got it out i found it to be a tightly wound coil spring (kershaw def has a better assisted opener). when i took this out it flew across the room. then after cleaning it putting it back in was a pain. everytime i got it in and tried to re-bolt it it came loose. and after many attempts the spring broke. i called sog and they of course couldnt send me a spring and said to send it in and pay 15 bucks... the knife is still in my drawer broken.

so id have to say, just call sog and maybe they can clean it for you. also on mine the pocket clip screws came loose very easily. i love the knife for what it means to me but will never buy another sog. good luck -CB

thanks very much, ill try calling them soon, i think i will try to oil it some, glad i just ordered a leek

your also listed being in the same city as me, just kind of amusing

Try liquid soap and hot water, work blade well while cleaning.

If this does not work, contact SOG, I'm certain they will help.

Robbie Roberson.

so just dunk it in water and dawn basically, move blade a lot, rinse and blow out with compressed air?

-matt

Yes, except don't just dunk, run hot water into pivot area while moving blade. I have used hot water and soap like this for many years. no need to use air if the water is hot because it evaporates in a couple seconds anyway (I have used a hair dryer though).

Let the blade and all inner parts reach a hot temp and it will dry itself......maybe just a shake or two with the blade close to remove any excess from pivot area.

Then, after you are sure it's dry, add a drop or two of light oil to the pivot area and it will be super smooth in a short time.
If the above does not work, call SOG. This method has never failed to work for me.

ok, where in the pivot area do you put the oil, right on the where the blade meets up with everything of into the little hole on the side where the spring is housed?

thanks a lot

Sounds like Buck's assisted opening system. If I were you I wouldn't open that can of worms.

Its not that bad, just be careful and take your time and you should be able to dissasemble and clean it fairly easy. Just be careful if you completely dissasembe to beware of a tiny detent ball in the deploy lock, its really small and easy to drop or lose. IMO its a better system than the kershaw, although I have them both I have broken 5 kershaws and am still on my first twitch and its still going strong, every kershaw I've had after about a yr to a yr and a half the torsion bar breaks and renders it unassisted.

so i cleaned my sog and im pissed

pissed that i didnt do it sooner. i just submerged in soapy water, swiched around, opened closed a bunch, rinsed with running water, blew tout really well with air, oiled a little and worked it some and it ha really smoothed out and is much easier to get a full deployment.

i still wish i could find a spring assist that was in between the sog and kershaw, i am just a little worried about my leek deploying while clipped to my pocket but i may just be worrying over nothing for that, but the sog is a touch harder that i would like and it seems to gunk up easily (6 months of carrying and very light use seems a little to temperamental when im not getting into dirty situations, heck if i was in dusty situations a lot using it i would expect to be cleaning like this monthly to keep it from getting bad)

either way, pretty easy to clean and the difference is noticeable just after the washing.

The leek will NOT deploy in your pocket, besides they do have a safety lock on them. Also I clean my knives that I carry daily on a weekly or bi weekly basis, so 6 months is a bit long for an assisted, no matter the brand make or use.

ya i really do doubt my leek will deploy but its still the worry, and the whole lock thing i find pointless because it takes away the whole speed of deploying (the only one ive seen in person so far that was easy to unlock was the buck ones but they didnt seem to great)

hmm well for the cleaning i guess i should be cleaning it more then, i do wipe the blade off after use (just on my pants) and will give the blade a good cleaning when i get tape residue on it but not much more than that). do you wash it and re-oil that often

I've carried a leek on and off for about the last 5 yrs. and only once did I have it deploy unintentionally and that was when I dropped it onto a hardwood floor. for what its worth I take the lock off and throw them in the trash when I pick up a new one.
I clean the actions per se on all of my EDC knives weekely or bi weekely depending on how mcuh I carry them. I was and re lube it, but I use a dry film lube to aid in not collecting all kinds of pocket lint and grit, I don't clean them as much as I used to with a liquid oil.
