Hi All,
Here are two knives that I made this week and they are special. I think they are two of the nicest knives I have made and are out of what I consider to be some of the best blade materials available. Both are Bowie knives and both have sharpened upper swedges. Both blades bevels are taken to 1500 grit then polished flats are taken to 650 grit then polished, makes for a nice contrast.
Here are the specifics.
The smaller of the two: CPM-S35-VN
Overall length: 9.5 inches
Blade material: From Aldo, 3/16 inch CPM-S35-VN to a Rockwell 61
Blade length: 5 inches, Height is 1.25 inches at its widest
Swedge: sharpened 1 1/8 inches back from the point
Finger guard: Hand shaped from 3/16 CPM-154-CM
Pommel is made from 416 as is the .25 inch All Screw Central shaft
Handle starts with a Bronze bushing and is stacked leather back to the pommel.
Handle length is 4.5 inches. It fits comfortably in my hand, I wear a size large glove.
Balance point is just behind the finger guard, weight is 7.4 oz.
The larger one: CPM-S30-VN (I am keeping it if no one buys it at this price)
Overall length: 11 5/8 inches
Blade material: From Aldo, 5/32 inch CPM-S30-VN to a Rockwell 61.
I used a slightly thinner material on the longer one to keep the blade weight down. I did not want it to be overly weighted towards the point of the knife. Not to worry, if you know your metals you know that CPM-S30-VN when Heat Treated properly is plenty strong, not brittle and the edge retention is . really great. And yes it is heat treated properly.
Blade length: 7 inches, Height is 1.25 inches at its widest
Swedge: sharpened 1.5 inches back from the point
Finger guard: Hand shaped from 3/16 CPM-154-CM
Pommel is made from 416 as is the .25 inch All Screw Central shaft
Handle starts with a Bronze bushing and is stacked leather back to the pommel.
Handle length is 4.5 inches. It fits comfortably in my hand, I wear a size large glove.
Balance point is just in front of the finger guard, weight is 8.7 oz.
As always comments are appreciated, good, bad, ugly, it is how we improve the craft.
Now the pictures.
Thanks for looking, comments always welcome. Ken
