Unique wedding bands

Okay here's a weird one. My wife managed to lose her engagement ring and wedding band, so I'm looking to at least get her a replacement wedding band. I didn't want to replace the whole set in case it shows up again. The thing is that everything I've found at the local jewelry stores seems to be expensive, and... well exactly the same as everything else in every other jewelry store. You guys have helped me with everything from air guns to bicycles before... so what do you know about jewelry?

Looking for something in yellow gold, with diamonds or without, preferably 500 dollars or less... and not exactly the same as you can find at Kay Jewelers or Zales.

Thoughts?

We have a thing here called "saturday market" where craftsman get together and sell their stuff. I bought my wifes engagement ring from one of the vendors. It's pretty cool. It's not a closed ring but rather the ends are held together by an amethist setting. Sorry no pics. Maybe you should try a local artist where you live.

That's a good thought, thanks! Maybe this is going to be a little harder than I thought! :)

I've seen a couple of threads here about folks making makume and damascus rings, not sure how different you want to get but a search around here might get you what you're looking for too...

Another good thought I'll go check the sale forums, thanks!

might try your local art and design college? a buddy of mine got his wife's engagement ring done for the cost of materials, plus a little, and the student got a commissioned piece to submit as an assignment (and practice)

I hag a friend who used to be a professional jeweler. So one day he was telling me how fun it is to work with the wax they use for casting. He showed me some stuff and let me play for a while. After a while, he suggested that I make a ring for my wife. I made the wax ring, plain band with a flower on it. We cast it in 14K gold and it came out very nice.

My wife wears it all the time. A lot of people ask her where she got it, they are very surprised when she tells them that I made it.

That's my ring story.

I've had good luck with jewelry. Turns out a woman who likes square stones, symmetry, and things that are unique but not weird LOVES her asscher diamond engagement (elopement...) ring even though she'd never heard of the cut. I also successfully "substituted" a $1,000 ring she pointed out in an antique store for $150 by searching for the individual elements she liked about the ring on eBay (blue topaz, stones arranged in a flower shape, white gold: http://www.ebay.com/itm/27083655488...l?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=270836554884&_rdc=1).
It was another home-run.

If there's something else your wife loves, throw it into a search with yellow gold and diamond and see what you get. One other suggestion is to look at "right hand rings" for more unique designs. She could also wear it on her right hand if she finds her original set ;)

I spent many hours shopping for a diamond ring last year and had basically the same results; the only difference from store to store was the salespeople and price. I then stopped by a small independent shop that sold not only new jewelry but also estate pieces. In a short time I had several options. I bought a unique ring at a fair price and it does not look like all the others.

Search thru the various forums here. The best thread on this topic had a number of guys who could provide mokome wedding rings.

If you don't want mall jewelry, find a jeweler who makes his/her own and visit the store in person. There is one nearby I try to avoid. Every time my wife takes me there, I want to buy something like this.

A guy named Jonathon Loose makes his own damascus and makes rings including ones with a gold underlay and precious gems. He does have his own website. I've never bought anything from him but have seen some of his stuff because he is from Vermont.

Jonathon Loose was a member here and made some awesome knives as well.
