I just got a Black Talon 2 off the forums here, and I know this knife is similar to the Spyderco Civilian/Matriarch, so is this knife meant to be solely for self defense or is that tip going to fail in utility tasks?

I love the tip and draw cuts this knife makes, really nicely done.

Hi, i highly doubt its tip gonna fail as unlike the spyderco civilian which has a very delifate and fragile tip, the black talon 2 has a much broader and reinforced tip. The "hook" design probably works rather well for opening boxes in my mind :D

The tip has enough steel in it to last, and it eats anything I try it on. However, I don't think I care for that strong spring action on the close. The tip is quite capable of piercing flesh with only that much force. On the bright side, the hole is deeper than it is wide, so just a little pressure and a band-aid required. This one is a lot of fun for random tasks, but I think I won't be trying to close it again without 100% attention and both hands.

I have the first edition Black Talon. She cuts like a screaming witch. I own 2 first edition Spyderco Civilian models. They're pretty to look at for a collector piece, but there's no damn way they'll stand up and take the licks a first gen black talon will much less the new ones. I love Spydercos, but they're pocket jewelry compared to CS. And that's OK. I like jewelry too. Mine just HAS to be more durable. That's because I use it

Jeffsenpai, your Black Talon 2 works awesomely for edc tasks. I carried it the other day. :D:thumbup:

I don't think that many people would argue that the Cold Steel Black Talon II is not the best self-defense EDC knife in the world.

Except that it’s not. Deployment capabilities are meh, and targeted slashing is garbage for self defense. The best SD EDC knives are either reverse edge or stabbing implements. A Spyderco P’kal is going to perform better as a self defense option. The BT2 is a fine knife, but don’t overstate it.

I think you have to distinguish between the best SD EDCs for trained people and for untrained people, ones are not the same as the others.
