Just ordered a LuthAR stock and 556 Tactical Stryker Comp for my target rifle build. Now all I have left to buy is a forend and scope rings and then I can start saving for a better than standard trigger. I'm looking hard at the UTG Super Slim free float forend. It's simple, looks good and is affordable. Also having trouble deciding between 13 and 15". I'm running a 20" HBar. Really looking to see if anybody uses the UTG and how they like it. If you have one on an HBar pics would be nice too.

I looked at that one but have decided on the Clarks carbon fiber hand guard. It is under $100 but is also semi permanent install because you glue the handguard to the barrel nut. I'm building a similar gun but it's a long range hunter in 6.8.

I had a Clark. I tapped 6 holes (3 rows of 2 evenly spaced) through the barrel nut. the tube is pretty tight on the nut as is. the barrel nut is aluminum and not much meat to it so you can't torque it too hard, but it ended up being a pretty solid setup. also, the Clark tube is very close in size to my PRI tubes, and the PRI rail sections fit it pretty well. just need to drill the holes. this pic is before I tapped the screws. I'll look for one from after. .

for the OP...friends don't let friends put airsoft grade parts on real rifles.

Blue109, that's the same furniture set I'm putting on my rifle, the ARFX and Clark's, though I have a 24" stainless bull barrel. I like the looks of the combo.

Did you glue your handguard at all or just the screws?

I've looked at the cf tubes and they just don't fit what I'm looking for. And the glued together bit absolutely ruins it.

didn't use any glue. a tiny strip of electrical tape before I snugged the tube on and it felt like it was glued though. took a strap wrench and a friend to get it off the first time.
word of warning. it sucks at heat dissipation. gets uncomfortably hot with any sort of fast shooting. not really a big deal for a bench gun.

for the price of the UTG rail, added to the price of whatever you replace it with when you decide it's junk, you can get something nice. check out the midwest industries rails. very nice and always on sale somewhere.

I've actually handled the UTG Super Slim and it is far from junk. May not be a Geiselle, but it's also less than half the price. I also haven't found any really negative reviews on it other than people saying "UTG makes airsoft stuff." True, and a lot of it was cheap imported junk. I used to be pretty into airsoft and UTG was a main name for accessories and such. While I wouldn't buy any airsoft stuff to put on a real rifle- even though I've seen it done a few times- the US UTG stuff is actually made for real centerfire rifles. And reading reviews on this specific forend people seem to be generally pleased with it. It's also one of the few forends available in a 15" length that doesn't cost a fortune. I was between the ALG Defense, UTG and MWI. I simply do not have hundreds of dollars to spend on a forend. Based on reviews from all over the net and the fact that I am leaning towards 15" the UTG is looking good. If anyone has any real world experience as to why I should look elsewhere, please. If not, let's keep brand trashing out of this please.

Thanks. I looked but don't see any YHM that specify 15". Don't happen to know a part # do you?

I'll eat my words a little. that UTG rail looks like it has stepped it's game up a bit. I've swapped out rails from utg, aimsport, and plenty of other toy companies on friends rifles. Guys who didn't want to listen the first time and ended up wasting more money, so I tend to try and steer people toward proven brands.

For YHM, check out the todd jarret line. Pretty sure they have a 15. Also the JP enterprise tube has been coming down price quite a bit.

Chip McCormick ar triggers are an upgrade from stock, not the top of the line necessarily. However, I don't know what is in it now. Just FYI. They don't break the bank too much either. Installation is not difficult.

I'm not a fan of UTG stuff, never handled that rail before but had an AK that came with one of their rails and it was ehhh. QD scope rings are a joke (my professional opinionated opinion). Only item I've found that was okay was their 1" and .83" risers to use on Bushnell TRS25

For a slim rail, personally, I'd spend more and get a Midwest Industries SSK

Oops, looks like I got a little mixed up, it was the Nordic Components I was thinking of, part #*NC-FFT-NC1-XL on joebob.

I'll check out the CM triggers, I've been looking at Geiselle and Timney so far. I'm actually not sure what is in it now, a standard Aero Precision I think. It's a used franken rifle I traded for and have been rebuilding into a dedicated target rifle.

Thanks for all the other input guys, I'll check out all your suggestions.

I narrowed my choices down to the same 3 tube rails. I would have obviously liked to have gotten one of those $200-300 handguards, but why pay so much when you can get something decent or just as great for half the price? I also have been out of work for a solid year so I needed to make the money I did have go as far as possible and still needed sights for my new AR15. I was pretty dead set on Mlok, (can't stand the look of keymod rails). I had actually ordered the ALG V1 for ultimate weight savings and for my needs it was perfect. I'm NOT one of those guys that needs/desires all that tacticool stuff or "have to put as much cool, new, latest and greatest tactical stuff as possible on my rifle build as I can" kind of guy. Only what's absolutely necessary and what my needs are at this time in my life and skill level. Then I got hung up on resale value and what would re-sell easier and be able to get as much of my money back as possible. So Mlok made the most sense, and that's why I originally went with the ALG V1. However, after vigilantly and continuously searching, I found the UTG PRO 15" super slim for $99 shipped today. Needles to say I canceled the other order and am glad to say I have settled for handguard I can be happy with, "for now" lol!. The decision wasn't easy. With Mlok being the best, up and coming attachment method in the industry, I was certain that was the best decision for me. The advancements are almost weekly that a new product or method is coming out and with Magpul being the frontrunner and the first company to jump on board and to embrace mlok, that seeks volumes to me. 100's of other companies, big and small have followed suit. Back to my point and why I chose the UTG. Other than the awesome deal I found for $99 shipped, the layout "looks of the UTG PRO SS 15" rail appealed to me because it broke up the plain jane, manotinous, "look" of that particular mlok handguard and most other mlok handguards. It was a really hard choice. I almost went with the Midwest industries rail because in the least, the mlok slots were off-set from each other and not in the same patern front to back, all the way around (make sense?). Hope so! The one bridge I had to cross and get over was the fact that the UTG-PRO SS handguard is a proprietary handguard. It does come with 3 picatinny rail sections, however! According to several sources,You are restricted to only being able to use the picatinny rail sections UTG makes and sells. NO other rail section from aNY other company will work, and despite the lightning cut slots that are very similar looking and almost identically spaced like mlok cut slots, they are not able to be used with mlok accessories. They are just slightly out of mlok spec enough that it won't work. Unless you have the tools and time and milled them out slightly and then had the rail either re-cerekoted or buy some rustoleum spray paint to cover up the shiny aluminum. Oh well! A long winded way to share what I ended up buying, but I thought I would give a little insight as to what my thought process was and why I ended up going with that choice. In the end, I'm was ok with the fact that the rail is proprietary, because my end use of the rifle as of now is for range use, home defense, possibly hunting, and general all around fun gun, plus I wanted a handguard with monolithic rail in case I re-sell it. Seems to be popular and what most ppl want unless they are building a race gun or just trying to build as light as possible.

Check out cheaper than dirt RIGJT NOW! 15" UTG pro super slim is only $99 with shipping.

JP enterprise triggers are sweet, at least in my humble opionion. Just traded for a bcm midey, and the guy pit a nice 4-4.5lb jp enterprise trigger in it. Sooooo crisp, incredibly short take up and even shorter reset.

Forgot to add one downside to the UTG pro SS handguards. They do not have any QD sling attachment points built in, like the ALG handguard and I believe the Midwest Industries handguard as well.
