Good Day,

I am being offered a Winchester 1300 Defender for $200 with ammunition.

Condition will be good, I know the gentleman, but I do not know the aftermarket on these.

Good Value?

Winchester reputation?

Anything to look out for?

Aftermarket?

200 is a pretty fair price for a used Winchester defender. They sell new for about $270-300 new. Nothing much to go particularly wrong with a used one, just look out for rust or a bulged barrel.

Winchesters have a solid reputation. They work.
I know a friend with a 1300 - he took issue with the 'speed pump' feature. Not sure if you've ever fired one before, but the bolt unlocks a bit early and the action halfway wants to cycle itself.

Regards

I've had my 1300 Defender for a couple of years now and have to say that it's my favorite firearm. :D

The price sounds very reasonable, since the price does range from $270-300 for a brand new Defender...just as Benjamin mentioned. Because of the speed pump, you can send out those 12 gauge shells real quick. IMHO, you can't go wrong with this Winchester. ;)

I think Winchester makes a fine gun. However, my understanding is that of the big firearms manufacturers, Remington is the only maker that uses a steel receiver in its pump gun, the 870. If I were to buy a shotgun, I'd probably try to find a good used 870 because of this. But you'll probably be happy with the Winchester as well. :)

Not to divert the thread, but whether the receiver is aluminum or steel or polymer (Nova) is irrelevant. The bolt locks into the barrel extension.

Very true, but my point was that the Remington might have inherent long term strength advantage over the other models. That is my perception, at least. I could certainly be wrong. However, the Remington would be my first choice and they are readily available used at prices similar to that of the Winchester in question. :)

MDP,

The Defender is a fine weapon. $200 with a goodly quantity of shells is reasonable. I've handled, 870s, M 90d, and even a USAS 12. For a pump gun the Defender does a good enough job. At $200 it does more than good enough for varments.

Mike
