I'm looking at some new Fallknivens.

I know for edge retention it goes like this: VG10<LamCos<Elmax

But how would you rank them for toughness?

Thanx

Elmax > LAMCos > VG10

A quick google will tell you LAMCos gets you similar toughness to 154CM, 440c, etc. Which are noticeably below Elmax for toughness.

LAMCos commands a premium over normal VG10, so I'm going to guess it's tougher. VG10 is not that tough from my use.

I've used Elmax and VG10, and Elmax is noticeably tougher. It's why premium fixed blade makers like TRC use them.

Hope this helps.

Well, I'll admit I don't have the same knife in 3 different steels so I can't give you a scientific answer. In my humble opinion, I think most Elmax knives are heat treated for toughness, and VG10 more for edge retention. My VG10 knives tend to chip, which leads me to think of higher hardness, lower toughness. Other than my one crummy Bark River, none of my Elmax knives have ever chipped.

VG10 wouldn't be my first choice for a survival knife.

In 2000 the Fallkniven F1, S1 and A1 models were tested by the US Naval Air Warfare Center in Patuexent River Maryland. The F1 and S1 were accepted for use by USMC and USN aircrews as survival/egress knives. These were the laminated VG10 core models. The A1 passed as well but was deemed too large for the flight jackets.

I'm a fan of LamCoS...... I have knives in all 3 but the LamCoS has my vote....Holds a good edge for a good long time and then its incredibly responsive to stropping.......Sharpens up to a laser very easily on my Billy strop from Strop man (RIP).

My kitchen cutlery are all VG10 and hold a razor edge, but toughness is not there. My absolute favorite steel is Elmax. I search out knives in this

The original F1 will be in Elmax late this year or early next. I've wanted to try one for years and I think Elmax is the final push, together with the new sheath.

I have used every steel Fallkniven has put out other than the ATS-34 the German made F1 was in. My choice would be Lam Cos currently but I may change that to VGWolf once I give the new F1 a try as it looks promising.

What are they? ATS-34, solid vg10, lam vg10, lam vg10w, lam cos, 3G and vg7? Any more?
