Hello from a long time lurker that's recently developed a sak obsession 😆. I was always a huge fan of the pioneer and farmer (93mm) SAKs, but I've since been finding myself preferring some 91mm models. I like the thinner blade stock on the 91mm blade and I find the secondary blade and scale tools very useful. I still like the pioneer/farmer, but these days I'm rocking my climber or deluxe tinker most days. What do you prefer and why?

I like 84/85 Delemont Evo Grip,
91/93 and 111 Vic's (have not tried a Ranger 79 yet)

Most carried:
Huntsman (20+ consectutive years), Evo Grip 14, and an Hercules.
Recently acquired and "breaking in":
LE Swiss Spirit Companion.
ALOX Pioneer. (silver)
Evo Grip S18.

Are you sure it's a Deluxe model Tinker? That's the one with pliers. The Super Tinker is the one that's just a Climber with a philips instead of the corkscrew. Lots of people get mixed up about which is the Deluxe and which is the Super, so that's why I'm asking.

What do you prefer and why?

91mm just because they're cheaper and you have way more options in terms of the different tools you can have. If the 84mm models had all the same options as the 91mm models, then I'd probably prefer the 84's just because they're slightly more compact.

Yeah it's the one with the pliers, which I wanted purely for the fidget factor, however they've proven to be very useful 😁! I would love a 84mm super tinker!

I prefer the pliers on the Leatherman Style PS over the SAK pliers. I carry a modified Style PS on my keychain, and I find that it pairs well with a SAK. While I do agree that the SAK pliers are pretty useful, there are 3 things about them which really bother me.

1. They add a lot of weight and bulk to the SAK.

2. The wire cutters aren't very useful because they're so small

3. They're not super great for actually turning a nut or a hex bolt head, and you can't use them in conjunction with the screwdrivers present on the SAK.

All of these problems are solved by carrying my modded Style PS. It's a real shame that the Style PS was discontinued. The wire cutters on them are fantastic. Best in the size category by far. And the plier shape is a lot better that the round SAK ones.

edit: It's been said before, but Victorinox should really make a small size key chain pliers multitool. I think it would be super popular. But maybe Victorinox is worried about competing with its own existing product line?

I tend to go to extremes. Most times I just have my 58mm classic on me, but if I'm going someplace or doing something I know I will need more tool/knife, my 93mm Wenger SI goes in the pocket. The Wenger has been my old companion on so many outings and trips that it never gets left behind.

The 58 and 93 makes a good team. The basic tool set of the SI is like the old Boy Scout knife I had as a kid, and later on, the army issue 'demo' knife that I used in the service. Has such a wide mission capability window and bomb proof construction.

I voted 91mm. While I appreciate the bomb-proof construction of the alox models, I use the pen blade too much to give it up. AND, I like having the tweezers & toothpick, and (on models with a corkscrew) the mini eyeglass screwdriver.

First serious EDC was a Tinker Small, back when the Phillips doubled as a sardine tin opener (only learned that recently, long after I lost it). Current EDC is a combo of a Cadet, Alox Minichamp, and a Milwaukee Fastback. I hate that Vic seems hell-bent on eliminating the 84mm line as they're just more comfortable to carry.

So my main pocket carry are the compact and the Pioneer X, but I have Rucksack, Huntsman, Deluxe tinker, and explorer in the "stash knife" box, if I'm doing a quick emergency kit, or travel bag, as they have a good mix of capability for their size. I would always pick a "better" knife in times I had the choice, but I'd be happy to have any of those if it was all I had.

I usually wind up with a SwissChamp. Lately, it's an 84mm Climber or Golfer with the requisite added pin & tiny screwdriver. Not sure why 84mm lately, but there you go. 84mm is a nice usable "small size" for me for most tasks and scissors are a must have for me. The 84mm main blade cuts like a 91mm for me, and thats what gets used most of the time anyway. However, I forget I have one half the time as they carry very small, especially the Golfer.

I've never owned an 84mm cellidor. I had a cadet but I lost it a few years ago and I got a cellidor Bantam to replace but it was faulty (the whole knife arrived bent 😆), so I sent it back and replaced it with a pioneer. I think I might order myself a 84mm cellidor model just to try it out, maybe a sportsman unless anyone else has any other recommendations?

The Tourist is a great option. Basically, it's a small Spartan.

The sportsman is a fine little knife
