Just found this on the Vic homepage. Looks like they are making the Classic with some fancy materials: Crystal, Damast and Carbon.

Comes with a hefty price tag though  Personally nothing for me, and I wish Vic would stop catering to collectors only and make something new for users.
What do you folks think?

They look ok. However, at $175 and $250 each ... they can keep them.
To be honest though, the Classic "Precious Alox" series (call it "$47.⁰⁰) or regular Classic Alox (call it "$32.⁰⁰") seems the better choice ... presuming you don't want the toothpick and tweezers.
For me, if I was in the market for a Classic, I'd get the Valox "Signature", and swap out the tweezers for the toothpick.
As it is, I'm more than happy with my Valox Mini Champ, (I already swapped out the tweezers for the toothpick), so I'll just stick with it, for my 5th pocket/key ring knife. 😁

I have some SD´s lying around... One in what used to be the ash tray of the car, one on the keyring to my Vespa, and a few i different drawers at home. It´s just so small that it´s easy to miss it when looking for it, and it´s cheap enough to just buy a new when passing the store. A nifty little tool to have as a backup. I did carry one on the keyring when I carried keys, now it´s mostly codes or cards, or even apps... But to pay Victorinox asking price for these SD´s is not something that appeals to me...

I agree with your sentiment, though I don’t mind collecting as such. (I have more than one 58mm sak myself)
Doubtless I’d be a keener collector if I throw a few hundred around without worrying where it falls!

I’m curious however, what are the improvements you would like to see in the 58mm range:
Manager - pen change for eyeglass screwdriver, or thick needle.
Stronger backspring for the pen blade,
With such a tiny blade the ability to hold an edge is arguably more important a special edition any improved steel might be a seller.
Doesn’t need to be too exotic Bokers N690 holds a good edge but can be stropped back to shaving sharp with just a little effort.

Blade hinged on the side as the key ring is a common complaint. On the Rambler this is not the case but the file is inside out.

I like the little zipper pull thing , they should offer those if they don't already.

Beyond that I also agree they should offer new users instead of just taking the easy route by making collectable versions of existing models to look like they're actually doing something.

As a SAK collector myself, I'll say that I'm giving these a pass. For what these run, there are just too many discontinued, rare, hard to find older (and more importantly larger) models that I could spend the money on instead.

Either I'm missing something or I didn't get the memo.

To put it in a nutshell, Vic is taking some standard SD classics, putting fancy handles on them and charging a big buck for it????

I am deeply praying that Victorinox is not taking up the business model of Case, with dressing up standard models for high prices and easy profit hike. Next thing will be a commemorative for truck makes, country western stars...

I fear, Jackknife, that you are correct and surprised beccause, for some reason, thought Victorinox was above such practices.

This is a form of marketing. It's raising the profile of the brand and attempting to manipulate the perception of the product as something more respectable, sophisticated, etc. It's the kind of thing that someone who is uninterested in such things could still look at it and recognize as being special and desirable even if they might not want it or they can't afford it. It's a kind of flex, but in a calculated way.

We may look at it as transparent and insulting, but we're not the average consumers with regards to swiss army knives. We want new models, or the return of previously discontinued ones*, and so stuff like this is mostly unwelcomed by us.

This is actually helping us in a way because it makes people respond more favorably towards our own accumulation and edc of swiss army knives. It's a way for them to feel like they can relate to it in some way, and to make it more normalized in their minds.

*ex: "bring back 84mm scissors!"
