Victorinox corkscrew vs. phillips

This is always a tough choice. Since the beginning, I always chose the Phillips scewdriver over the corkscrew. I did not know that the small flat head screwdriver that is combined with the can opener is intentionally made to fit a Phillips head screw too. It fits a #2 Phillips head screw perfectly. Because it comes out of the end instead of the back, I always use it instead of the Phillips screwdriver. Also, if you get the corkscrew, you have a place to keep the little eyeglasses screwdriver that lives in it. You can order the eyeglasses scewdriver as an accessory if your model did not come with it. So, the corkscrew may be a better deal for many.

Also, the slot in the end of some of the Phillips head screwdrivers is to unzip a sardine can.

Also, the Vic. saws cut like crazy. I won a bet by cutting through a 2x4 in 30 seconds.

Any comments or questions?

I actually prefer the Philips screwdriver. I have absolutely no use for a corkscrew.

Vic SAK saws rock. :D

I prefer the corkscrew, not because I use it for opening wine but it is great for carrying the mini-screwdriver and also is good for teasing out knots in string and jewelry chain. I don't value the Phillips that are spine mounted. I prefer the models that have the Phillips as a regular tool.

I love the corkscrew. Almost don't consider it a SAK unless it has one.lol.
And the corkscrew can hold the little mini screwdriver.
Actually for those who must have a philips i think theres an article over on SOSAK about how to make a little mini philips screwdriver to screw into the corkscrew.
I now own about 14 total (!) (84MM/91mm/111mm) SAK's . All but three have corkscrews.
I have NEVER used the philips. As was stated above the canopener tip is good for philips screws.
Lately I've been wanting to try a Wenger EVO but haven't purchased because they all seem to be burdened with philips and lack corskcrews.
For me the philips is the most useless tool on a SAK followed closely by the nailfile and that hook thingy.

And as a novelty i just bought a "my first Victorinox plus" knife. The combo tool rocks! It replaces the canopener and the bottle opener and makes the knife one layer thinner.

i also like the corkscrew... i think i said the same stuff you did in the last thread on this, the mini screw driver and the knot thing are both pretty cool, it wasn't until recently that i noticed that the can opener worked so well on Phillips screws since i've always carried a SAK with a Phillips driver

i'm also a fan of the combo tool... although i don't think it will work as well with Phillips screws

i had forgotten about the slit in the Phillips drivers, i haven't had one with it in a long time, the last one was a black handled one with a Boy Scout logo, i couldn't find another one to replace it when i lost it and eventually bought a Swisschamp to replace it

anyone know what model that would have been? it had Phillips and a saw

ooh, and the saws...

i actually did the Pepsi Challenge with the SAK saw vs. the Leatherman saw, and it's not even close. the Victorinox saw just cuts so much better

I just picked up a used one of those Vic Boyscout knives on "Fleabay". Basically it has all the tools the Vic huntsman has, except it has the philips instead of the corkscrew and it does not have the hook thingy.
I think new ones might still be available at the boyscout website.
Generally i think the Hunstman (with corkscrew) is the best compromise middle of the road SAK, not too big not too small.

The split in the Phillips wasn't model related asmuch as age related.

Actually, I just did the same recently with Core V. Swisstool saws, and altho the Vic won, it wasn't by much. Several years ago, when I put up a Super Tool against a Swisschamp, it wasn't even close. I think maybe Leatherman improved their current saws.

Very well put. I do use mine at least a couple times a month to open wine though.

yes. the can opener flathead fits phillips #2 perfect. as well as #1 and #3 somewhat. (come to think of it it only fits phillips, as I haven't come across any flathead that it fits better than the bottle opener does.)

yes. the built in phillips drivers are much better and more versatile than the T-hndled ones on the spines.

yes. If you have the corkscrew you can house the mini-screwdriver which is great.

and, I have been reading about the combo tool recently, and believe it or not, its tip (the one that pierces the can) is supposed to fit phillips 1 and 2 screws. I have not been to test this, as I have no models with the combo-tool.

I will go with the corkscrew based on a fishing trip to Kentucky a couple of years ago. I am generally a beer and/or potatoe juice man but one of the guys brought a couple of bottles of wine and no way to open them. They knew I was a knife and multitool geek and looked to me for rescue. Fortunately I was able to come thru with one of my Saks that had a corkscrew, don't remember which model but it saved the day.

Just tried the combo tool. Yup it works on philips. Believe it or not it took me about 15 minutes to actually FIND a philips screw! I'm in Canada birthplace of the Robertson screw and that is the most common screw i have kicking around in my tool box/junk drawer.
:D

For me the SAK corkscrews are awfully hard to use on the new synthetic corks. If I think I might need to open a bottle of wine, I take along a little Oneida waiter's corkscrew. It's stainless, about 2-1/4 oz, 4-1/2" long (folded).

Hi Richard,

The old Vic corkscrews with the edge groove work great on the synthetic corks - the current "grooveless" ones just seem to jam the cork against the bottle.

Elsener - are you listening????

As a point of information, the grooved corkscrew was made with no other purpose than cosmetic. They discontinued it due to production expense.

Corkscrew. I can't tell you how many times I've been glad to have it handy over the last 15 years.

I have found out that the can opener also will work with a bit of luck and paitence on Torx head screws.

Corkscrew or screwdriver? I believe it's a matter of where you are.

I carry a Spartan most of the times and I do love wine, so the corkscrew is simply an essential tool to me. But when I go hiking I usually don't bring glass bottles with me, so in that case the Philips screwdriver on my OH Trekker is better. :)
