Hey,

I was looking into getting a small SAK for my keychain and have settled on the Midnight Manager. Before I pull the trigger I need to ask a few questions, I have been out of the SAK loop for a while and my search-fu was inadequate so I hope you all don't mind answering a few questions from the new guy.

How well does the bottle opener work? It looks a good bit different from their normal bottle opener but does it still retain the function?

Is the retractable pen user replaceable? Also how often do they fail? I have had similar pens in other tools before that seem to work once and then die.

Finally, is the battery for the LED light user replaceable or does it need to go back to Vic? Any durability issues reported?

Thanks in advance :)

The bottle opener works fine. It's a small version of the bottle opener you'll find on say a Farmer or Spartan, but it has enough grip to open a bottle.

I've got my Midnight Manager for a few months now on the keyring and the pen still works, but it's my first SAK with a pen so I don't know how long they typically last. To answer your first question on the pen: yes, it is replaceable. I just tried and it seems you can just pull the pen out of its holder and put a new pen in.

The battery is also easy to replace. There's a small opening on one side of the battery holder. Put a needle or such in it and you can push the battery holder out of the scales, then replace the battery and push the battery holder back.

I have used a Signature for a while and I have used the pen quite a bit. Still writes fine. Seems to have a lot of life.

I use the bottle opener on my Rambler quite often and it works well. I like to loosen the bottle cap a little at a time in a couple places until it comes off due to the slightly delicate nature of the small SAK, as opposed to doing it all in one go with my Soldier.

I'm glad I read this thread. I've always wondered about the pen being replaceable. Now does anyone know where to buy the replacement at?

I'm sorry, I don't know where to buy it in the US. Here in the Netherlands there is at least one webshop that I know that is specialized in Swiss army knives and sells Victorinox parts. It's not hard to find, but Dutch members can PM me if they want a link to that shop.

I got mine as a present when turning 40. Im now 45 and the pen is still working. I use it on the laundery list and for my name in a few occations so not many males of writing fut taken out once in a while. As for the light I still has the same batery. It isnt a wery bright light but has been better than none a few times. My kids has played with it so the batery seams to give that crappy light for a long perioud. Mine is the reed light anywhy. the caplifter is funktional but not as good as the large ones.
