Hey all,

I've been eye balling a ranger grip 79/m it's weird not calling it a wenger but here we are. I want to pick the brains of those who have them....

Having had a one hand trekker vic in the past, I know these liner lock models from vic have bladeplay, I loathe blade play. I've heard through YouTube the ranger grips are better about this.. is this true? Up and down slop, how much yours got?

How do you like overall build quality? On par with regular vics?

If the vic OHT models have been tightened up lock wise in the last idk, 8 years, since I had one.... let me know.

Thanks... hope someone has one to chime in.

I had a Ranger Grip recently and we parted ways. It had the same degree of blade play as my OHT models and, in my opinion, didn’t offer anything that my other knives lacked. Except greater bulk that just got on my nerves.

Darn, we'll I appreciate the information. Saves me some hassle

I just checked my 111mm OH liner lock Vic's (I have about 5-6 of them , some old, some new) : they do have a *tiny* vertical blade play (hardly noticeable for me).

My OH Ranger Grip (model 68, bought new, never used yet) also has the same tiny vertical play.

My other 111m liner lock Vic's (non OH) seem to have zero vertical blade play.

I don’t have any Victorinox Rangergrips, only a Rangerwood (same knife but with hardwood scales). No blade play on my unit. I do have some of the original Wenger Rangergrip models, and no discernible blade play there too. I far prefer the Vic/Wenger Rangers to the OHT for ease of lock release (by pressing the logo). The OHTs are unintuitive for lock release, unless one is left handed.

Interesting, thanks for chiming in, much appreciated!

Not necessarily an EDC, unless you like large folders.
I have a few. Minimal blade play. Doesn’t bother me.
The lock is an improvement over the slide lock on 111mm models.
Excellent outdoors companion. Largest saw blade on a vic.
Prefer the one hand open since there is no nail nick in the blade.
Great for food prep.

Overall quantity build is great IMHO.

I honestly never noticed before checking just now , but yeah there is a slight bit of rock .

Zero lateral play .

I like my Ranger Grips . Seems pretty sturdy . Nice , usefully big saw , etc . Haven't tried any crazy tests though .

The blade of my RG 78 (111 mm, I believe) locks up with no play in any direction. (Push the shield to unlock.)

That makes 2 of us. No blade play in any direction. I did not even know that is an issue with the RG's (if it even is).

I too have the Ranger Grip 78, the very capable saw alone makes it a great camp knife, not to mention the sizable blade.

I recommend it.

The movement up and down isn't an issue per se, it's preference. I always chuckle at lock up threads, understanding how these liner locks are made there will be some play, it isn't like most folders where the tang of the folder engages the liner and the liner wears over time. In this case the liner moves over 100% on day 1 of ownership, it is designed that way, so there is movement up and down. If you hold the blade and wiggle up and down there's play.

Allegedly the 130mm saks have better tolerances on this, but apparently that's not the case. I might head to smkw where they have more knives in stock than anywhere in the USA and feel a few out.

I prefer solid lock up, but in these vics I don't think it effects usability or function. So no issue, unless you're ocd and don't like play.

Thanks for checking, everyone!

Good luck, friend, finding what you are looking for. "It's not the destination, but the journey that matters".
