This is an old seminar done in Bayonne NJ with Greg Alland, a Pekiti Tirsia/Silat (Pangian Lima Empat) stylist.

The tape starts with a philosophical monologue and demo of full contact sparring

The seminar starts with a short speech about kali, silat, martial philosophy. Followed by a description of various blades and woods with some dramatic license and a veintenueve aka the Giant Balisong or 'Balisword' if you like.

Alland mistakenly calls kamagong (ebony) "kamagoong". For the Tagalog speakers, I think he means he soaks his kamagong sticks in bagoong.

Next comes a description of triangle footwork, closing the gap against the stick, proper/improper ways of evasion, and a demonstration of Pangian Lima Empat (4 stepping) footwork, based on the square.

The Walking (low center of gravity) footwork is discussed along with the link between footwork and the Tinikling dance. Allan briefly mentions countering a wristlock and describes wrist grab escapes with the stick and empty hands.

The 12 strikes zone and chaining strikes come in next as well as counters to kicks and a hands vs stick sensitivity drill and a knife drill from Silat. Alland briefly explains Pekiti Tirsia's methodology and we're shown footage of teen doing a form.

The Silat section concludes the seminar, earlier Allan combines escrima footwork with silat footwork and starts this section by donning a demon mask and doing a form.

Applications of the form against a kick and punch combination is next, showing Silat sweeps. Brief footage of Silat demonstrated in Indonesia is shown during the credits.

Alland is a character, he combines drama with a Filipino accent much like Noriyuki "Pat" Morita emulated Fumio Demura. There has been some past controversy with Alland and his old instructor Leo Gaje.

Incidentally,he's the only FMA instructor who wears an Indiana Jones hat while teaching a seminar. He just about wears his school's logo shirt everywhere, even on the Ricki Lake show during a 70's theme party show.

What I liked about the tape was his explanation style overall.

Donna, it loses it's comedy after a bit.
The footwork combo is a brief, transitionary moment that leads directly into silat.

I like the tape where Eddie Jafri teaches the class. Plenty of knife.

I have also heard that Alland is a character. However, according to my teacher (Dave Wink), Eddie Jafri and Leo Gaje are "characters" themselves. I think it's a "birds of a feather ..." kind of thing.

I haven't trained with Leo, Eddie or Greg, but it is interesting to see Dave Wink integrate the Kali and Silat. Even in his full contact fighting, you can see the silat come out.

Respectfully,

Dave Fulton

Which tape has the most Pentjak Silat knife in it, where can I get it, how much is it? hahahahahaha I love this stuff.

Do your djurus more, it's in there.

If you think about djurus from knife
perspective you'll see what I'm talking
about, and the stuff that's in there is
effin nasty. The thing with this style
of thinking about it is that perhaps these
techniques were originally intended, perhaps
you're finding them yourself. To ensure that
this happens, try finding two or more knife
applications in each djuru... ordinarily I'd
suggest that you share them but in this case
definitely do not do so, these things don't
need to fall into the hands of Mitchell the
Mauler. Especially in this insane time of
naked church swordsmen who had some sort of
interest in silat...

(many times the slapping movements in the
djurus seem to be knife or weapon related...
just a hint.)

And from your posts I'm sure you're an
asskicker of higher calibre than myself so
I intend no disrespect.

Greetings,

I have heard of Eddie Jafri and i know that he worked with Leo Gaje for a while. What exactly was his system and what is the history between these to men (Gaje and Jafri). Also what parts of Jafri silat worked well with Gaje systems. Any information will be appreciated.

humbly yours

Johnny

Nightowl, you're better off asking Tuhon Bill McGrath or P. Greg Alland for more details. As I understand it, Suryadi "Eddie" Jafri and GT Gaje met up during the 70's. Jafri calls his style Pangian Lima Empat (4 Corner Stepping) on his tapes, a system that uses the square as a geometric footwork pattern, this is NOT a box step.

Alland showed the similarity between the square footwork and the side triangular footwork of PT in his seminar. It's been a few years since I saw the tape and only now can see a similarity.

What threw me off about Jafri was the name of system mentioned in the Black Belt Indonesian weapons article. It was Pera Taki Sendo instead of Pangian Lima Empat, I assumed Jafri just taught one style. BTW, Black Belt also stated that Jafri taught Kali stick technique to supplement Silat knife.

Greetings,

Thanks smoke for your information. I have seen Greg Alland and Bill Mcgarth web sites. I may send them a e-mail yet again they are busy guys. Thank you again for the information smoke.
