Vnox Waiter or Bantam?

Does anyone find the corkscrew useful for any other purpose besides opening wine? (not a wine drinker) I find that it snags onto stuff in my pocket. I mean, I don't mind it on the Explorer, but for some reason I do mind on the Waiter.

Thanks

I tried carrying a waiter, but I also found the corkscrew to be a PITA. It also made for an uncomforatble grip when griping the knife for hard cutting. Now I carry a bantam and love the minimalist aspect of the tool. The combo tool takes the place of the two other tools and does a better job.

The bantam is rapidly becoming my edc pocket knife, along with the classic on my keyring. Makes a great team.

I had a bantam that I really enjoyed carrying. However, I sat down somewhere and must have dropped it out of my pocket:(

That said, I only bought the bantam because they didn't have the waiter. I learned at my father-in-law's 60th birthday party that one should never be caught without a corkscrew at a social engagement. Basically, there wasn't one and we had to run to walmart to buy one:rolleyes:

I still haven't picked up that waiter, but I never head to a party without my climber simply because there MIGHT be a need for a CS or bottle opener;)

Between me and my wife, who also carries a SAK, over a period more than two decades there have been maybe 4 times an emergency corkscrew saved the party. That sort of thing happens, but not often.

Think of it like that Afghan saying many of them scribe on their blades: "You may need me but once in your life, and for that you must carry me all your life." :D

I've used the corkscrew to untie knots before. Also it holds the mini-screwdriver which if you position correctly it should stop threads from getting caught on the corkscrew tip.

Just use the blade to cut out as much of the cork as you can, then fold up the blade and use the screwdriver to bump the cork all the way down through.

Hey, its a party, you're gonna drink the whole bottle anyways! With some help of course.:D

i use the corkscrew occasionally, and like the small eyeglass screwdriver that you can carry inside. As stated above, it may stop the snagging in your pocket.

Another way to use a knife blade; if it is narrow enough to fit into the bottle neck, drive it into the cork deep as possible (locked blade best for this), then twist as you hold the knife at a slight angle and pull up. The first time I did this was with a Surge and it worked perfectly. Next time was with a Charge, and was more of an effort, involving the destruction of the cork, although at last successful without pieces of cork in the bottle. Whether the difference in results was due to blade size, condition of the cork or operator competence is not clear :D . Both attempts, though, were the most effective and least messy substitute cork removal methods I have so far tried.

Well I don't know about your waiter or the eyeglass screwdriver you're using but the ones I had fit in mine and all of the 84mm corkscrew models I had.

If it isn't going in all the way (I found that sometimes) I just had to screw it in a little harder and it went. Was easier after the first time. But seriously, this worked for me on at least 5 different 84mm models with a number of different vic mini screwdrivers.

I love my alox bantam.. day to day don't need the CS but will carry a Spartan if I think I need one..

Need a Pioneer sized Alox Bantam.. Too bad they don't offer one.. Now that would be the EDC to end all EDCs.

I totally agree with that.

I never drink, so I have no real use for pulling corks from bottles. I have used the corkscrews to pull apart stubborn knots, but that is rare, too.

Mostly, I find the corkscrews to make the knife uncomfortable to use for long periods of time. I have given away all of my personal SAKs with corkscrews. I have a Tinker and a Mechanic that have Phillips screw drivers in the same location, and find them much more useful in my life, and more comfortable to actually use the main blades for long periods of time, but having nothing on the back, like a Recruit or a Spartan, is even more comfortable.

I agree with this reply.I have several Bantams that I rarely carry for the lack of corkscrew. The Waiter 84mm is one of my favorites.YMMV.tom.
