Hi folks,

I've been trying to locate a decent anvil in the Colorado area and finally found one (via ebay) that's located in Denver. I plan on looking at the thing today and was wondering if anyone knew anything abut the Vulcan brand. This is a #100er and I do not have a clue as to its age. I've read a few statements about Vulcan's and I'm hearing both good and bad evaluations. Some say that they are really quiet and well made, while others say they are junk.

Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated. If anyone cares to take a look at the anvil its ebay item number is 6131552198. I'm the only one , thus far, to bid. If anyone also thinks it's a keeper, please tell me what you would pay for it.

Many thanks,
Dana Hackney

I have a Vulcan 150#, I've been using it for 5-6 years. Its good and quiet, but doesn't have much rebound. This isn't a concern to me, because I don't bang on it every day all day long like a blacksmith would. If your planning on doing a great deal of blacksmithing I would advise against it, but for bladesmithing I don't think you will ever need anything else.

Hi Bill,

Many thanks for your reply regarding the anvil.

I'm hoping it'll work for me as, at present, I've got nothing and I'm going to be staking some forging classes soon (from Steve Rollert of Dove Knives - near Denver) and I'd like to have something to pound on for practice.

I'd love to buy a nicer anvil but all the ones I've found (mostly ebay) that are reasonably priced cost a fortune to ship as most of them are located in the Eastern US. Maybe someday :) .

Thanks again, Bill,
Dana

My father-in-law up in Darkest Arkansaw has had one for years, and has absolutely no complaints about it...and he uses it all the time, although not for making knives (he's a retired mechanical engineer, and "tinkers" a lot.

Boy! I took the liberty to go to your homepage, via the link under your name, and was I impressed! Maybe having the same brand of anvil will help me :p .

Thanks again,
Dana

I'm thinking that If I can get this piece for a reasonable price I'll jump on it.

Best regards,
Dana

Dana thanks for the compliment. I don't know about helping you, but if it doesn't, you can always blame me. We all need someone else to blame other then ourselves from time to time. :D :D

 You mean, I can blame YOU for that 9" bowie blade I have been working on being reduced to a 4.5" hunter? :D

Danbo, if you've reduced a 9" bowie to a 4" hunter, I believe you might need to look closer to home for the problem. But hey I don't care, you can put the blame on me. :D :D

I would not walk across the street for a Vulcan anvil. Thy are cast iron not cast steel with a hard tool steel plate fastened to the top. A Friend bought one and it had edges that were crumbling. He tried to rebuild the edges with 7018 welding rod, the plate came off, warped up and away from the body of the anvil and now the anvil is no more than a boat anchor, not a good deal no way to fix. I would save my money and get a good one. And don't tell me that welding up the edges of a anvil won't work, I did this to my anvil 15 years ago with no problems. Gib
