This sounds like it might be illegal, so it probably is. But...

I had the crazy (But practical, methinks) notion of building a conceled locking folder into the top end of a walking/hiking staff.

Would this be a no-no in California? I know that "sword canes" and such are illegal, but what about this? Just a long-handled folder maybe?

Edit - Oops, never mind. Found the law. Illegal. Oh well. I guess I can still make a bayonett mount for one...

no no in ca. any object that is a weapon disguised as something else falls under 12020 pc. ie sword canes, lipstick knife, air gauge knife, etc.

i see you found the law, but basically any undetectable weapon is illegal.

I had a simular thought that was to attach a bayonet lug to the end of a walking staff and carry the bayonet on a sheath. A qiuck snap and you have a spear.

If a bayonet would be okay, hows about a folder that was inlayed into the side/end of a staff where it was clearly able to be seen that it was a knife? It seems that the "conceled" part is the no-no (I'm sure Mr. Ranger would still think it's a naughty thing to have on his trail and haul you in for it).

Also, if one wanted to get picky about the wording of the law as it applies to staffs/canes/etc., it seems like it's aimed at things that can be drawn from concelement (As from a scabbard) and used as "swords or stilettos." (As opposed to "spears and limb loppers:D ) Lipstick case/air gauge knives/etc. look to be a separate issue (I don't think I would want to test the law though).

Also, I have an little kit that has a knife handle with various tools (Knife blade, saw, hammer, file, can opener, screwdrivers) that are inserted into the handle and locked in place with a lever. If I were to build the handle into a staff, I'd think it would come in handy on the trail (At least the knife and saw blades).

I dunno - Maybe I'm thinking too much again...

you may have gone into uncharted territory here. i would have a hard time applying a law to the configuration you mention, as long as the folder is closed and in the open. and i dont imagine you will be walking down main street with this.

if it was clearly visible and evident that it is a knife, i dont see a problem while you are hiking in the woods. in an urban environment, might be kinda suspicious.

the handle kit thing sounds a bit riskier. if the blades are concealed withing the stick that is.

again, i have never seen anything like these knives you mention, so i cant say definitively either way. but probably not a good idea to test the law, check with the park rangers next time you are out there. there is nothing wrong with making it and asking around.

The kit has a handle with a female socket that accepts the blades with a male dovetail on them. Blades would be carried separately from the staff. I think it would be fine from a legal standpoint, but would not be as practical as a built-in folder.

I wouldn't be carrying the staff in urban areas - It would be strictly for hiking out in the sticks.

Do CCWs apply to cane swords etc?
and First Responders are allowed to have assisted open knives yeah?

Check out the Crawford Survival staff. The dagger screws onto the top or into any one of a few locations inside the staff.

Interesting, but illegal in CA even without the blade. Blowguns are illegal here too.

Strangely enough, you can build a high-powered air rifle of any caliber you like into a walking stick in this state with no restrictions - Just no blades, blowguns or firearms...
