I am just getting into knife making and have made a knife for my brother for his birthday. it still needs a little more sanding/polishing and its ready to have a handle put on. I wanted to do something a little more flashy then the wood i can get locally being poplar and red oak. where do you all shop either online or locally for hardwood and burls? Do lumber mills deal with individual buyers?

Side question if using burls and possibly other things to make handles from should I look into doing at home stabilizing vs having pieces done professionally? I have yet to look into the price per piece to have this done.

There are several BF members who specialize in selling knife handle material. Check out the Exchange under knife makers' supplies. You will find plenty of burl wood already stabilized. If you don't see what you're after PM one of those members and give them your business. You can find plenty on ebay but why not support members who contribute to BF.

I will also encourage you to read much of the "how to" section to answer questions about stabilizing wood or having it done. People in the custom and handmade section are always willing to help but you will probably find more answers to your "getting into knife making questions" in the knife making sections.

There are many places to buy wood or other handle materials, here are a few to start with: Knifekits.com, Jantz supply and Texas Knifemaker Supply. Woodworkers Source has a large variety of local and exotic woods. Hope this helps. Dan

I didn't say there was a section called "getting into knife making" - I suggested you check out the knife making sections "General Knife Maker's Discussions" (learning the craft and sharing info) to answer YOUR "getting into knife making" questions.

You are not getting much response in the Custom and Handmade section of BF because it is really about custom knives, custom knife makers and custom knife collectors. It is not focused on helping members make their first knife.

BF has sections for this and I'm simply trying to point you in a direction where you might get more/better response to your questions.

In looking through the forums I did not think that section was for what it contains. On mobile I dont get descriptions of what each area is for.
thank you for your help I will begin posting in that section with entry level questions.

"General Knife Maker's Discussions" would suite you :D
