OK, did the woodburning, the BLO soak, wipe down, and 550 wrap on my warhammer. I'm possibly going to do the Futhark runes between each of the burn bands (the name I want to inscribe has just enough runes), but I want to wait until I go out and get some royal blue or azure paint to fill them in with.

Until then, some pics:

First, a good "tearin' people apart" team, Black Mamba and Hellrazor:

The reason I became interested int he war hammer is because I am writing a sort of high fantasy story and the main character lives in a northern land of harsh steppe bordered by thick forest. Think Russian steppe meets Norwegian forest. I got to thinking, for people who have to survive in harsh climates, and may have to do anything from heavy chopping to digging, to picking through rocky soil or hammering in stakes for a yurt, what would they use?

Well, I naturally thought of my CAK/R-10 combo, which can do most of that. But what of the things I really either don't want to do with a kukri, or that they just suck at? OK, let's face it, kukris suck as hammers. OK, so I want a hammer. Kukris aren't going to pick apart rocky soil well, and you will damage the edge severely doing so. OK, I want a pick. I looked at rock hammers, but they are too small for serious work (because they were never meant for it), and you don't want to tote around a sledgehammer and a pick mattock on a single horse (these people would tend to not have an extra pack animal unless it was a work party). then someone mentioned a CS war hammer. I wasn't looking for a weapon, but it does, in fact, do all of those things well, as well as serve as a fine weapon (much like a kukri). All that's left is a portable shovel for digging. I don't have a CS Spetsnaz shovel, but that's pretty much the design these people would use (I use a folding GI shovel, although I'll probably get a CS shovel to complete the set). So, there, you have all the tools needed for surviving a bad area, indeed for just about anything needed for primitive living.

Their other shelter, clothing and food items would be carried in a canvas rucksack that usually rode strapped to the back of the horse, or could all be carried on foot, if necessary.

that war hammer looks pretty sweet! i think the runes would looks awsome too.
i think you should sand the paint on the head a little, to make it look a little more old world. good job

I thought about that, but this leaves it with a sort of wrought iron look to it.
I'm thinking I might just beat the hell out of it and let it wear in naturally.

BTW those pics are AFTER I put a few dozen holes in the bottom of a 55 Gal drum I'm going to use as a burn barrel, and dismantled a few cement bricks with the hammer head.

I like a cap on the end of the handle. Copper pipe endcap may work or the Cold Steel walking stick caps if they still sell them. makes that end a bit more useful I think. Just a suggestion.

I like the cord on the langets, hadn't thought of that in the past.

I did strip all the paint off them and the head. Came out fine, and I like the looks.

It's a cool tool for not a lot of cash.

looks awesome brother. i actually broke the handle of my warhammer yesterday. going to town on an old washer and hit the sharp edge of the sheet metal a few too many times. split it longways. im thinking i may try to run up a single langette for the front out of sheet metal and rivet it in place. so it looks like ill be ordering another. i definitely say go with runes. they didnt exactly protect mine from misfortune but damn they look cool.

That's one reason I did the cord wrap around the langets, it give some cushion should I miss.

I did some more demolition of cement with it yesterday, with both the spike and hammer head. Just scratched it. I love 5160. If I could just get someone to make me a 'hawk out of it.

In reality, though, this is just a stop-gap until I get back to work (hopefully next week) and can send the other head off to Vec for what I really want.

unless your in actual combat, the langettes on the sides dont do much good. but one one the front and back would be useful for overstrike protection. i dont think they would be difficult to make at all. what will your vec handle look like?

I don't know.

Been thinking about a "rawk" handle, or maybe a black stadia handle to match the Black Mamba hawk.

I posted this pic in another thread but what the hey. My new Rawk Hawk. The langettes would add unnecessary weight. Over strikes can be reduced with familiarity of your tool. Remember the hawks is a tool that is a weapon. Or is it a weapon that is a tool?

Well, not to mention I've already discussed it with Vec, and he's going to make the haft heavier for strength and also bias it front to back for heavy hits and prying with the spike.

PS is that a G1 Zulu in the pic?

Thanks for the ideas. I ordered a CS War Hammer a few days ago and am looking forward to customizing it.

Great looking set of tools there Cpl. Sorry for the thread derail here but will this story be published somewhere? Sounds really interesting. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Here's my project so far. I stained the shaft with 2 coats of mahogany then used fine steel wool to take the shine off the head and shaft. I'm thinking of leather wraps for the handle as it would look more "period" than paracord. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I took the paracord off mine.

I got some rawhide lace from Tandy, and some Feibing's leather dye, and dyed it up and did a wrap under the head and one at the end of the haft. I covered the langets with the top wrap, so you can't tell they are there.

How do you recommend attaching the leather, especially on the handle where I assume it will tend to move around?
