I discovered this forum yesterday after purchasing a Warren hatchet-hammer. I've flipped through the online Warren Axe & Tool Co. catalog and could not find anything resembling what I have. I've also found nothing on line matching the "WARREN" stamp since mine is not in cursive. The rough texture is interesting and I assume original forge marks and not corrosion or rust. I would appreciate any knowledge you may have on this tool, especially an estimation on the date it was made. Also, feel free to educate me on the proper term for what I have. I've come across many names including axe, campers axe, rigger hammer, axe-hammer, and the list goes on. Here are a few photos after a good cleaning and a few coats of linseed oil.

That might have been from the J.M. Warren & Co., Troy NY, which sold (but evidently did not make) their own brand of axes.

"...one of Troy's largest hardware stores... incorporated in 1887... Warren's sold nationwide until the building was burned and torn down in the 1970s..."
--quoted from Troy, by Don Rittner, Arcadia Publishing, 1998, page 53

I would call it an old style carpenter's axe, but stand to be corrected. It has a hammer poll, straight chopping edge, & a V for pulling nails.
The rough marks all over the tool look like grinder marks, not forging marks. I would guess it was covered in rust & other gunk, & the seller clened it by grinding with a belt sander.

The rough texture is interesting and I assume original forge marks and not corrosion or rust.

The texture is from the original factory grinding of the hatchet. Not forge marks. The pitting is from a light rust.

Nice little hatchet. Good find.

I bought it for my son and I to use when we go camping. Tomorrow, we're making a leather sheath for it. If it turns out nice, I'll post a picture. Thanks for the information.

Here's the sheath I made for my hatchet. It was my first time working with leather, so be kind.
