I watched "Law & Order SVU" this weekend and John Stamos' character was killed with a WASP Injector Knife. The knife is designed for underwater use, particularly for protecting one's self against predators. The knife has a canister of compressed air in the handle (like a pellet gun) that connects to a channel in the knife blade. When the knife is stabbed into something -- like a shark, for example -- the compressed air can be fired into the object, causing it to burst, freeze, or in the case of an underwater predator, driving it to the surface.

It seems pretty deadly. I hadn't heard of the knife before and looked it up here: http://www.waspknife.com/

I saw this knife on another forum a few years ago. Crazy contraption that it is, I wonder how many people actually use it as a defensive diving knife.

It's a cool gadget but I think if I was that concerned about sharks underwater I'd have something like a pole spear with a powerhead. Come to think of it powerheads are pretty similar except they use a blank cartridge to generate the gas. I wonder if a smaller version of this might be a good alternative for divers that can't obtain a powerhead legally. A lot of places restrict them because they're technically a firearm. I'm not convinced that a knife is the most effective format for the device though.

I'm curious. How on earth have you managed to miss the fifty threads that have been started on this contraption here in the last three years? We were getting two or three a week for a while.
