Just curious....what do the locals do about clean water down there?

Nothing. They live there and drink it right out of the rivers.

Got Giardia twice so I figure I'm ahead since I've drank straight from streams many more times than two.

Is it just a myth that you can only get giardia once?

After reading this thread, and doing a bit more research on my own, I bought the Vario. It just showed up today, and I have only done a function check so far.
The first couple pumps caused it to eject a cloudy black water at first. I'm guessing this was powdered charcoal? It cleared up almost immediately.
BTW, I'm still keeping an eye out for a suitable backup filter too.
