I dont understand which one is better. Some people say WD-40 because it removes, lubricates, penetrates, and protects.

Some people say 3 in 1 because it lubricates and protects yet remains on the blade longer than WD-40.

Somebody help me out because it seems like with the WD-40, i would only need that.

So long as the knife is kept reasonably CLEAN, either one can work fine. I've used WD-40 almost exclusively, but I also keep my knives very clean. Some say the 'heavier' oils, like 3-in-1, can become gummy over time. If so, that problem will be made worse by dirt accumulating in the gummy oil. The WD-40 will penetrate more deeply, because of the solvent built into it. That solvent will evaporate, and leave a light coat of oil behind (that's the other 'part' of WD-40). As with any lube, less is always better. Apply either one too heavily, and they can get gummy, which will attract & hold dirt.

So, bottom line, keep it CLEAN and lube it LIGHTLY, whichever lube you choose.

Both have very strong odors, and I wouldn't use either. Try Hoppe's 9 gun oil. Odorless, and you can get it with the needle tip.
