I seen a total of 5 bald eagles. This guy just watched me float by.. Two of them were yearlings I believe. One flew by with a huge fish and another flew past carrying a tree branch.

The yearlings. There were actually two on the ground. One flopped under the bushes and you can barely see him. I looked up and seen a huge nest that I could of slept in..

Island camping.Fishing, drinking, cooking all sorts of stuff, listning to some tunes and just relaxing by the water. Saturday heated up nicely so I did take a swim. Two large mouth bass were caught and released. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY..I finally got to use my Silky Saw (bigboy model). It cuts through wood like butter, honestly. The ILBE and Silky Saw are two pieces of gear I'm glad I bought this year. As you can see this is a well used camping spot. We make this trip once a year and always stay here. Three weeks earlier this whole island was under water. We never have to walk to far for firewood.

The weatherman said "no rain Sunday until 7pm". We packed up and hit the water @ 11:00am. Within 10 minutes it started raining, then pouring. 3.5 hrs of paddling in the rain, so refreshing. Thanks for looking everyone. CD

Thanks Codger. I always enjoy your canoeing adventures and you actually inspired me to post my trips. If it encourages other members to get out more its all worth it. I'd have more to post but,, so far this year two trips have been cancelled. Bad weather and heath issues. I'm hoping to get at least three more trips in before it snows. CD

Excellent adventure! You weren't kidding about "much baggage"! That is one of the advantages of water travel. In many places, you can go as light or heavy as you wish as long as you have the cargo capacity. Over the years I have adopted a lot of the ultralight backpacker items and at the same time a lot of "I didn't come here to rough it" items.

I stayed close to home this holiday. While my heart was on the river, multiple reasons kept me home. My best friend was feeling under the weather... in preparation for my upcoming trip out of state, he had his annual physical and shots. The immunizations were hard on him this year and he is still recovering. I will post some pictures from Idaho later next week though if I survive the high altitude layover in Denver. A whitewater rafting trip on the Snake River is in the works and I am pretty sure I will be trout fishing while I am there. No, Jake will have to stay home... or rather boarded with our vet.

Thanks for posting this. I really wish more members would do so.

We stayed home this weekend as well. Our youngest daughter wasn't feeling well. I never post about our family camping because I haul around a pop up and we stay at public campgrounds, but I do take my tandom kayak for the kids. The pictures loaded in reverse order, some day I figure this out.

Here's the same kayak I loaned out to one of my buddies last year. Its rated 400lbs. He's at least 250 and had another 100-125 lbs loaded up front. We did almost 11 miles on that camping trip. These plastic kayaks can take some serious abuse. I bought that one 13-14 years ago and used it so many times I can't even remember. It was around $300 new.

Ever since I moved out to Freeport PA from Cincinnati, I've been telling my girl Kim I want to do exactly this! I miss it. It's a ton of fun.

Wow. You weren't kidding when you said a lot of gear. Good thing you had the canoe. I probably would not have wanted to be the paddler in a canoe so heavily loaded. But it looks like you had a great trip and outing. I hope the loading of the kayak was sort of a joke photo.... :D Paddling in the rain sucks, especially a hard rain.

To the contrary, if one is prepared and skilled enough to cope with it, paddling in the rain or snow or in darkness can be a very rewarding experience. It is a totally different experience from paddling in sunshine, sure, but can be neat none the less.

Thanks for the bump guys. I enjoyed rereading the trip report. My canoes and gear have been packed for a road trip for a while now, so I've not had the opportunity to get out on the water.

I've been through that stretch with the eagles many many times by canoe. My parents have a camp nearby. Eagles are beautiful majestic creatures aren't they? Glad you caught a time when the water isn't high, it seems like every time I go this summer the water is wayyy up

I suspect it could be "rewarding", but being soaked to the skin is not a lot of fun to me. If you know the water, night time paddling might be fun especially if you can creep up on some of the wildlife that is very active at night.

I don't like to paddle at night if I can help it, I'll go night fishing on larger boats but not a canoe or kayak... 22-rimfire that touring kayak loaded down with the ILBE backpack is mine and wasn't a joke... I've used that kayak "loaded down" on at least 5 trips so far.. The longest was around 19-20 miles and it cruises nicely.. When I'm out camping its my vacation time and as you can see by the tent pictures. We don't really rough it.
