Picked up this old girl recently.
Came with original "blueprints" box and most of the original paperwork dated 1990.
(This one is a little later as it is powdercoated which started in '91)
She's in reasonably good shape, except where some Muppet has,I assume, tried to sharpen it with a belt sander.
Notice the off centre blade markings,I have seen this on both the older parkerized blades and these powdercoated ones.
On with the rebuild.
Drill out the pin and remove the pommel, leather spacers and guard.
Leather looks to be in very good condition despite the salt on some of them.
A little rust toward the end,and the powdercoat has bubbled off.
Lines drawn for the modifications.
I plan on putting a high grind like the current version knife, and adding a choil.
The high grind will eliminate most, but not all,of the damage done by the Muppet.
Rough shape of the high grind and choil.
This was done by hand with a new file.
Both sides done.
Blade coating removed.
Bath time! Pure white vinegar, left for a few hours to colour up.Toothpicks help to get acid evenly coated.
Next stop is the paint shop.
Reassembled with an extra washer in the handle to tighten it up as the originals had shrunk a little.
Pommel was drilled right through and new pin (a nail) installed.
Sheath and handle given a good rub of bees wax.
The blade edge set to 20 degrees per side, and given a quick rub on the diamonds to bring her back to hair popping sharp.
Like the farmer says at the end of the movie,"That'll do Pig,that'll do".
