I recently received a Wenger Buck Knife, no big deal, except that it has stainless steel scales. I have never seen this before and can't find any record that Wenger ever made stainless scales. Are these custom scales? If they are, they did an amazing job making them as they mimic the Wenger scales perfectly. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Let's try this in the Buck Forum. Lots of collectors of Buck knives there.

Look very closely.
Are the sides solid or a very thin shell overlay?
Are you sure it is stainless?
Sterling silver, look for a tiny hallmark around the periphery, most likely on the end.

Wenger were known to do aluminum and sometimes pewter scales, I've not seen anything on them doing stainless scales.

wow, i dunno what you have there.
and going on known information,
it certainly is not representative
of a standard production swissbuck model.
but one thing is for certain though,
in that the main large blade tool
on all known swiss bucks was a clip point
instead of wenger's standard spearpoint.
so yeah, you have a nice wenger sak
but i m no expert to make
any judgment beyond that.
thank's for sharing
and good luck with the search!

I’m not sure and maybe I’m wrong but Just looking at the pictures it looks like it’s a plating that is coming off. Perhaps nickel plating on a composite base or even aluminum. I’ve seen that before and when new it appears to be solid metal but after a lot of use it starts to wear off. Cool SAK thought.

Thanks for the replies. The reason I thought it was stainless was due to the weight, it is quite heavy compared to the regular version of the Wenger Buck Knife.

I did miss the hallmark at the end of the knife. So it is Sterling Silver and the scales are solid which would explain the weight. Here is the pic:

Do you know if Wenger made a Sterling version of this knife? Tiffany maybe? (I doubt Tiffany as they would have their stamp on it).
