Just wondering if any of you know were I can buy pine pitch(or pine sap). I tried googling it but got nothing.

Do you specifically need pine pitch or would other types of pitch do? Try checking into chasing and repousse' work to find out where those guys get their pitch.

Do a search for brewer's pitch - James Townsend and Sons is one source.

Other sources are art suppliers such as Sinopia.

I assume you want the hardened rosin rather than the liquid pitch?

Hey Chuck, Brownells has powdered rezin. Townsends used to carry the brewers pitch, but I am thinking they discontinued it. Try them if rezin won't do.

I'm not sure if it will matter if it is liquid pitch or rosin. It is going to be part of a recipe that also includes beeswax and carnabau wax. It's all melted together to soak antler in.

get "rock" rosin at horse suppliers. Rough stock rodeo guys use it to aid their grip. Powdered rosins often have talc and other moisture absorbing additives.

The pure "rock" rosin can be heated a bit to make pitch or it can be dissolved in alcohol... depending on what you want to do with it.

I do a lot of repousse work (Chasing in a bowl filled with pitch) you do not want normal jewelers pitch if you are going to be using it as part of some sort of stabilising compound, jewelers pitch generally has all sorts of things like rock flour, linseed oil, etc. in it to give it body. You might want bass rosin, or just find a white pine tree that noone is watching, cut a "V" shaped cut in the bark, and collect it as the tree weeps. Baby oil, DL Blue Label hand cleaner, and McDonalds french fries will all work somewhat for cleaning your hands after:D

There is a company called Northwest Pitch Works that makes pitch products, people swear by their stuff for chasing, but their website is less than good, and they don't take cards or Paypal, so I haven't tried their stuff yet

hahaha i hope youre joking about the fries :barf::D

i would say even look around at pines around you. id imagine you could find one thats been pruned or something and already has a big gob of pitch. maybe music stores for fiddle or other bow rosin, i dont know if its even close to what you need tho.

not joking about the McDonalds fries.
seriously when I was working on cars I would try like hell to clean my hands afterward (goop, DL Blue Label etc. followed by dish soap) there would always still be black grease in the pores if my hands. I would get a Big Mac and Fries, and I kept noticing that I would have to handle the food with napkins because handling it was dissolving the grease that nothing else would touch, and I didn't want to be eating it! I know oil dissolves grease, and I'm sure the ionic action of the salt has something to do with it too, but there seems to be nothing that BigMac sauce and McDonalds fries will not dissolve off your hands.

Sunshadow: What is "chasing" and "repousse"? Yes it is going to be used as a type of stabilizing compound, so I'm assuming I want pure pine pitch. So, is rosin more of a pure form of pine pitch? I hear ya with the cut a tree idea, I have them all over around here, but here just happens to be the middle of the city. I don't think I could stand by a tree with a bucket for more than two minutes before I started drawing attention to myself.

Ok, say I was able to get sap from a pine tree, how would I clean it and get all the crap (wood, needles, bugs) out of it? Will that stuff float to the top when the sap is melted?

repousse is an ancient technique in which a flat piece of sheet metal is given 3 dimensional form by laboriously working it with tiny punches on the surface of a bowl filled with pine pitch.

Technically if you are working the front of the item it is chasing, if you are working the back it is repousse.
I like it because I can take a flat sheet of metal and make it almost any shape I want

repousse is actually not used just for jewelry, Tom Ryan does some amazing work in 14 gauge steel backed with lead using a 3 pound hammer and ponches the size of stone chisels

Thanks for the link, but they are selling theres as use for incense. How do I know that there isn't a bunch of other stuff added to it?

Also, anyone know how I would clean up sap I collect myself?

I would heat it until it gets runny and run it through a screen. You may be able to heat the water out of it too, but be careful, sticky hot burning pitch was what folks used to use before napalm

The resins they sell are not mixed with anything unless they say they are. I bought pinyon pine resin and it was in chunks with some pine needles still attached to it. So even if you buy it you will still have to filter it. I make most of my own stains and use quite a bit of their products such as black amber and gum arabic.

This is from the top of the page that I hyperlinked:

"We specialize in what is known as resin incense, loose incense, granular incense or powder incense. These resins, gums and woods are direct raw materials from the aromatic plants themselves."

Just a 1/2 oz of pinyon pine resin will make your entire house smell like the woods for many days.

Hey everyone,

I know this thread is about five years old now, but I was wondering if any of you could help me out.
I design furniture, and I want to try using natural resin mixed with other natural ingredients (probably marble or limestone powder) to make planks to make furniture, or to cast the furniture in a mold. Do you think using pine sap or rosin would do it? If so, what should I mix it with to make sure it hardens when it dries?

Thanks!!

it wont dry, it will always be a little sticky when warm and will have no strength. There are reasons that the standard for that kind of work are long chain polymers. That said this thread should be closed and if you have questions you should start a new thread and let this one die or get closed by the mods
