The wife got me a new Wetterlings forest axe today for father's day. I really like it the quality seems great but it seems like the fit and finish is really lacking on them, it almost looks used. I'm sure its new as the handle and the butt of the axe is flawless, but the grind seems really poorly done (It is very sharp). The "W" in the Wetterlings stamp is half grinded off. Is this normal? I kinda like it as it really gives character to the axe.

I posted about gettng a Wetterlings axe and the Smoking Mountains Knives had the best price and in stock. Next day the price goes up. I ordered the axe anyway. Seems to be a Wetterlings shortage out there.

The one I got was the last they had in the store, at $79 a pop you would think there would be more of them around. I'm not sure but I heard a rumor that Wetterlings was bought buy another high-end axe company?

Gransfors Bruks.

wetterlings/gransfors also makes the husquvarna axe line, kind of a in between in fit and finish between watterlings and gransfors

I got a Wetterlings that was so rough it looked like a blind 8 year old made it. The measured cutting edge was off by almost a full inch from advertised and that was the final straw for me. Luckily the online merchant understood my gripe and gave a full refund. IMO it was unacceptable for a $50+ axe.

Sorry for the bad Wetterlings experiences. I have owned five Wetterlings. One was a lemon-not in fit and finish (which was really excellent) but in heat treating. All my other Wetterlings (from the 13"/1 lb. Wildlife Hatchet to the 25" Forest Axe) are really fine tools. The most recent Wetterlings I've seen are much better in the fit and finish department than an axe I purchased five years ago, or so.
