WHALE'S RIB BONES

A friend of mine is 1st mate on a dagger. For those who don't know a dragger is a fishing boat that drags the sea floor for scollops. He will be saving me any bones that comes up. New Bedford, Ma. is one off the largest fishing ports on the east coast. My question is has anyone used this type off bone after they have been dried and stablized???

George:
Years ago I used Beluga Whale Ribs for knife handles. There was no stabilizing services available then, but they made a great looking knife handle. I would imagine the same must hold true today. Let me know if you have extra you want to trade off. Thanks. Hope this helps.

I carve tons of whale bone here in Alaska. It all comes from St. Lawerence Island where the Eskimos have lived and hunted for over thousand years. Most of our whale bone is from bowheads. It is mostly too spongy to use for handles. The toothed whales had pretty solid ribs.If it is solid it shouldnt need need to be stablized.I cannot send unworked bowhead whale bone across state lines because it is still under the indangered species act.The laws are very funny an any thing having to do with a whale. The fossil hunters diving off the coast of South Carolina find bone and teeth from a prehistoric type of sperm whale that is kind of neat and you can do any thin you want with it. Yup, they are probably illegal. I must check into it. But how about making handles out of bones from the sea. Be'g the straight dude that I am, I would hate to screw the gov't.It would be like running straight pipes on my Harley (Big Bertha 2 1/4").
