I would be grateful if you could assist with a query that has been bothering me for sometime now. I friend of mine reckons that there is a specific knife used to skin/chop up a whale. He challenged me to find out what it was actually called (perhaps Japanese in origin - but this could be a red herring!!). So far I came up blank, and then I discovered this forum.

Can anybody please tell me if there is a specific name for a whaling knife used to skin the animal.

Thanking you for your assistance in advance.

Drew.

From "Boarders Away" by William Gilkerson.
A "boarding knife". About a 30-inch blade with a very long handle. Used to cut the whale up as it came aboard.

They also used one called a "Flensing knife", I believe.
Not sure the spelling is correct though.

Drew,
Welcome to the forums. Here is a link to pictures of a boarding knife and the other types of knives used in the process:

By the way, your friend may have been refering to a"ulu" ,which was used by Eskimos to prepare the blubber.
