What angle does Buck put on it's hunting knives?

Dexter,Welcome.Good question. In Bucks literature from the early 70's it said 17-18* as the sharpening angle from the papers in the box w/a new knife.Maybe it changed some from then until 2000.But in 2000 it change to 13-16* and this is on one of the speciality steel models. So, I'm not sure if thats consistent w/all models. But if you own a devise which allows you to set the sharpening angle use the later.I'm sure you'll achieve satisfactory results.I use 15* on my clamp and by hand and which gives me good results.DM

Also, I found some 1980 papers that came w/ a 4dot 110 and Buck in that says to use a 10*. So, its been changed from time to time.DM

Thanks for the replies - I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker - so I guess I'll use the 30 degrees, inclusive.

Dexter, Use what you like but I would not use such an angle. As that steep an angle would cause the knife to cut slower and not maximize its potential.DM

Believe it or not, there is a PDF on sharpening buried deep within Buck's website. Try this :

Thanks - I'm surprised at the 13 degree - the 15 degree on the spyderco sharpmaker looks good.

"The angle on a Buck Knife is ground to 13-16 degrees per side (see illustrations). If you hold the knife against the stone to cut evenly across the edge grind, you will produce an edge with a similar angle. If you hold the blade at too high of an angle, the resulting edge will lose some slicing ability (but will stand up better to chopping). A good rule of thumb is to hold the blade so the back of it is about one blade width up from flat on the stone."

Dexter,Yes that is the way Chuck Buck taught me while in his office during the 20yr. Reunion.Yes, 30* is for an axe not slicing.DM
