I use 1x30 belt sanders for sharpening and am trying to find out what felt belts are used for. Thank you.

For putting those nice shiny MIRROR POLISHED FINISHES that I love on blades but alas no one want's to do it. It's all satin, stonewashed (real boring,) coatings, and polished usually turns out to be half polished.

So come on guys use them with the finest polishing compound you got and put that mirror (imagine a CS Kriss with a mirror finish) finish on my ugly stonewashed blades.

Muppet pants?

We have a rescue dog.... She's a 70# lab/mix. Which probably means Pit. She's an Angel. Unbelievably loveable.
Her fur is really short, clean, and dog's fur like that have always reminded me of felt.

One of her Many nicknames is "Puppet Butt"
which would Have to be the cutest thing made of felt!

On my AMK-75 1x30 Sharpener, I use linen belts like these https://www.woodworkingshop.com/product/sb26865/ and 'load' them with, variously, diamond pastes, Gunny Juice, Autosol, chromium dioxide and Tormek honing compound. I've seen felt belts and wondered if people used them the same way, but have never tried one myself.

I just spotted this 2017 post by the late Ken Schwartz over on CheffKnivesToGoForums that provides some insight on the felt v. linen question.
--------------
I prefer linen, learher and as a distant 3rd felt.

Leather belts stretch and the 'join' sucks - bump bump bump every revolution - even the surgisharps.

Felt works ok with the diamond bars, but not so well with the emulsions.

Thinking back, I believe that it was Ken who got me started w/linen.
