The basic traditional Japanese outdoors (hunting/fishing) knife is the MAKIRI a simple double beveled knife. It would be equivalent
of the Scandinavian outdoor knives. "Makiri" is the Ainu name for the knives the aboriginal people of Japan carried.
The Ainu Makiris ranged from curved to straight blades and used extensively decorated wood carved handles and sheaths,
Modern versions are mostly straight blades, use Ho wood handles, and often plastic sheaths. They can usually be bought for
$20-40 and can come in Carbon, with or without Kurouchi finish, or Stainless.
G.Sakai of Seki prodoces a modern
version complete with Kydex sheath.
