I was reading some posts recently and they called the Game warden a knock off of the 110. I believe I had read that the 110 was patterned after the Puma at some time. Please set my memory straight,it is driving me crazy.

from dave's 5 cent history of the 110
three locking knives were observed and shown to a buck eng..
one was from a US maker and the other two were from Canada makers...
the lock blade via the notched blade was used by one of the Canada makers but not in the same form/style as the 110 had and still has..

the 110 was never patened nor one applyed for...
there are storyes that puma copyed the 110 in basic design but i have not firm information on that

it is known that one company used the off side of a 110 in their advertiseing while they made a simlure knife.

sorce of the above :
Chuck Buck , atlana balde show- 2007
any more questions?

ahhh. you are welcome!
further resurch after a 2ed cup of sanka
inducates the 'game warden' showes up as first made apx 1968.

Hi Finder,

Good question and Dave thanks for the answer!!! Now to spin this thread in another direction. What is your favorite 110 knock off???? I'd say that over the years I liked the Rigid Apache in stag (never had one) and have always liked the Puma stag (never had one).

Looked at the Puma stag's at Cabela's awhile back---but the quality just doesn't seem to be there anymore---went with the Buck 110 AG.

My favourite 110 clone is the Camillus #9

I got this one near the end of Camillus at Gander Mountain, it was 1 of 2 of the last USA made ones in their "Buck Masters" line, left in the store buried under a pile of their offshore replacements made in china.

$19.99 and really well made!

the older puma had my eye but was more then the buck 110 was..
i have handled them and was impressed but thought them over priced back then.. the newer ones .... still like buck best but is a good knife in its own right! was always impress that each one back then had a hardness test dot on them.
sharade LB ... looked to funny for me to use with its cut off front bolster...
rigid... never had one (buck made a knife for rigid once ... dont know which one tho...) [good triva wuestion for Joe]
sears craftsman knock off .... good copy good price fairly good knife but not a buck with its good steel..
Case shark set .... hammer head ect ... good edge for meat i guess -hard to sharpen and very brittle edge as too hard with out beef in the edge...can not cut metal conduit straps with it at all
but...
i really really liked the style of oval frame on the large one a LOT, it was jest like the browning copy ...real nice in your hand but the edge was more fragle then the buck...
used all working NOT hunting so your experances may differ...

I know we are supposed to be flattered by knock-offs but I don't really like any of em...the 110 always had a rock solid elegance that did not come accross in the other products.

I am somewhat biased here tho....

I picked up cheap 110 knock off from the local home despot more out of curiosity. It locked up fine, but had side to side play, I've never seen any of that with my 110's. Keep making a fine USA made product, and we'll buy it.

I like the Remington R-3; I have two of them. If Buck added an accessory blade to the 110 (like a saw with shroud-cutter), I think it would take off like a rocket... :) In fact, if it were me, I would market it as an urban survival tool...and specifically target SUV owners...

I don't know if it counts as a knockoff, but cabela's guide series with the s30 steel is sure nice

The Camillus is nice (I have one from the 1980s sold by Sears as a Craftsman).

The Schrade versions were nice, especially the Old Timer with the carbon steel blade.

There were some decent Japanese-made copies under various brands in the 1980s that were pretty good. American Eagle and Parker Cutlery are two that I have, and the former was sold by Sears as a Craftsman.

I like my old 1980s Explorer Tiger Paw too. Although it's not that well made, the blade is ground really thin like a current day Buck 110.

If we count 112 copies as well, the original (1980s) Rigid Knives (made in the USA) had a sweet lightweight 112 clone with a bolsterless, linerless micarta handles called "Black Feather." No nail nick. Aside from no Buck stamp on the blade, you couldn't tell it didn't come from the Buck factory.

I always wanted a Puma (I read the old Gutmann "KNIFE" annuals over, and over, and over!), but now they don't seem like they are worth it. I'd rather have a Custom Shop Buck 110 or maybe Bass Pro 110 in CPM 154.

Can anyone tell that I started collecting knives in the early 1980s and had a liking for 110 and 112 clones? :D

(knock-offs) - I don't really like any of em...the 110 always had a rock solid elegance that did not come accross in the other products.

This is also how I feel, but then again I have never owned a Buck "knock-off"

I am somewhat biased here tho....

I am sure there are a few of us in this forum that feel this way also... ;)

rock solid elgance ... good discriptive phrase... have to rember that one come contest time ....hee hee hee !!!

yes i know of some of the copys only as i was given one or found one
or !lost my buck!
and needed a knife or
was debating with others and haveing a test cutting with them...
won all work chalange test cutting with my 110's...
like i said good steel
they can make them look alike or cheeper:rolleyes: or what ever but it is not the same

kinda like any one can kinda sorta temper steel but Bos has the best recipe of todays steel cooking roundups....

some times tho i realy would like to see an sweet looking oval on the frame and bolsters cross section profile as a vearant :o ...
but would it still be a 110 ?
guess not .. more like a 120 vs a 124 some the same but very diffrent...
though even the 560 looks like a 110 to me...
guess it is the buckskin colored glasses i ware...:p
some times when i close my eyes i dream of a 110 with a 112 hook that is mine and that i can stab with with out worry of my hand sliping forard:) ...
ah but at lass! i wake but yet ...
strangely it seems i heard a mumble of one that existed...

I was sad when I learned the 110's were no longer made with 440C steel. After years of bragging to other hunters of their edge holding abilitys. I know some of those guys know/think I am full of it cause I betcha some of em, on my advice bought the newer 420HC and it just ain't the same.

I wasn't up on things for years, just knew my everyday carry 703 wasn't near the steel my 110 was. Sigh...I am still a big time Buck fan in spite of it.
