What can I carry in NYC?

NYC compliant is an oxymoron. Are you talking something that's compliant with the ambiguous laws of a state known for corruption on all levels? Or something that no NYPD member could ever possibly decide is an illegal gravity knife that warrants your arrest and prosecution, simply because they're having a bad day and want to make themselves feel better by taking out their frustration on you?

The simple answer to the question is stay the hell out of New York.

Short answer - slipjoint. Opinel, liner locking sod buster, etc.... should work. A simple test is to see if you can get the knife open the most oddball flipping motion you can think of, it doesn't matter if it makes no sense at all, if they can figure out how to flip the knife, it's illegal. Keep it under 4" blade length, also do not use the clip if it has one, they look for pocket clips, and will maybe stop you if they see the clip.

a leatherman is legal in the city or under 3" fixed blades all of which must be concealed. This is based on what is still allowed to be sold in the city, outside of the city is very different laws. The police if they stop you and find the knife will try to get you to say its for self defense or personal protection once you do its now illegal. Have any illegal substance on you and they find the knife, the knife is now illegal regardless.

I EDC a Tops Ferret (it doesn't print in pocket) and Leatherman Skeletool in the city and the skeletool pocketclip is showing. Any other pocket clips shows they will take the knife

when i was in NYC last,
i wore Levi 569 carpenter pants.
it has an extra deep watch fob pocket, you can carry up to a 5" closed folder without it showing.
if you leave your tshirt untucked, even better.

And still get arrested if they catch you. FWIW, the NYPD is known to be field testing equipment that is designed to be able to detect people carrying guns concealed in their clothing, just something to consider.

Good to see you ask here :) I still think you're best bet for now would be to get a SAK Cadet or Pioneer. I wouldn't worry about the blade thickness as there's no need to pry with one of these blades and if you do need to pry, you have other tools specifically made for prying. Also, the blade thickness on the Pioneer is thicker than the standard SAK blade.

If you want one hand opening, I would look at Spyderco's slip it lineup. They are (mostly, orange one isn't) one hand opening slip joints. When the NYPD raided stores to remove "gravity" knives, they knives like SAKs and UKPKs. All in this pic except the yellow lockback are Spydero Slipits. All my UKPKs are drop point models but they also have the leaf shaped blades like the Urban in the upper left. The black one is readily available now and comes FFG. All the clips are removed from mine as well.

Technically the length has to be less than 4", not 3" unless the law changed recently. I still wouldn't have a pocket clip showing. All this below started because of a pocket clip.

I was thinking about posting this video....Cops see a knife clip on a 17 year old and chase him. His parents and friends try to prevent the arrest and it ends up with four people arrested and a pregnant woman injured...All over an exposed knife clip, and the teen and his parents feeling the police were going after him for no reason. Don't resist arrest, but a simple pocket knife should not be illegal in the first place. It is still 4" blade limit in the city.....NYC Admin Code 10-133.

They don't care. The law is whatever the cop on duty says it is. And it'll cost you thousands to prove otherwise, with no legal protection to prevent the same from happening again the very same day the court sides with you.

Stay. Out. Of. New York. It's that simple.
