What did you rehang today?

I wish I knew some of the history of that axe...
I love thinking about the history of my rust hunt finds. I literally hold historical artifacts in my hands. If the tools were found locally, then I can be put them in context of local history , like my adze find. Around here ,it's within my grandfathers time and later. Since my latest finds have no makers stamp, tracing them is impossible. As I'm loath to call myself a collector, they are merely good users. When I was carpenter apprentice back in the later part of the last century, I worked with an old, he was 62, chuckle, Swedish shipwright/carpenter . He called his tool box his scrap iron collection.

I made this sheath last night. Not fancy, but I'm happy with it. I have posted the axe before, it's an R. King boy's head on a 23" hickory handle that I made myself freehand. I made everything on this axe except for the head. I like that it all looks hand made and not factory perfect, just like someone would have done for themselves in the past. It's a keeper.

Very handsome mask JB, I love the color of the leather and the contrast to the thread.
Simply elegant and most practical.

Great job
The axe is definitely a keeper

Another beautiful piece, like all of your work!

I brought home this no name rafting pattern last week, I've been wanting to try one as a spliting axe. 6 ridges in the eye lead me to believe this is a True Temper, and I also discovered a "4" stamped on the poll . Actual weight is 3lb 14oz.

Is it a safe assumption that the poll has been hardened? It would seem strange to put the weight stamp on a soft poll... Either way, the poll looks clean and unabused, same can be said for the bit.

I lucked out and found a nice 36" straight handle at a local used tool store (AKA my favorite place in the world, lol). Can't beat $5! Added bonus was that handle had no kerf cut in it, which made fitting the ridged eye much easier.

Mainly used my Stanley no. 65 shave, a 4-in-hand, and a razor knife. I am very happy with the hang!

And ready to go to work! My goal is to use this as my main splitter for this season . I'll process about 4 cords this year. Thanks for looking!

Great looking axe!! I guess oklahomans didn’t use this pattern much because I have never seen one in person. I can get double bits by the truckload but no rafters lol.
I'm guessing that they used and still use truckloads of them here. I see a lot of Collins and no name rafters here but they sell for high dollars.
Heck, they even made a logging movie starring Paul Newman here.

Beautiful job, thats just the right axe for what you're wanting there.

Theres a pretty high chance it's a hardened poll, being a likely True Temper rafting pattern. But not all of even the rafting pattern were. A file or vinegar etch will not lie though.

The stamp on the poll, is no indicator. I've several TT in various other patterns with the poll stamped, that are not hardened.

Thanks muleman! I believe it was one of your posts that I remembered seeing others stamped on the poll. Hardened or not I do not have any intention of doing much hammering with this!

So I put some lipstick on the pig LOL.

This hatchet started out as a cheap , unmarked Chinese item.
As good quality tools are very hard to find , I used what I had.
Surprisingly the heat treatment on this hatchet appears to be quite good.
I completely reshaped and trued up the head as best as I could , using hand tools only , (Hacksaw , Files , Rasps and Sandpaper).
I replaced the dreadful Chinese handle with the only substitute that I could find , this substitute handle is made from an unknown wood that I treated with raw linseed oil.
The handle was also thinned out and reshaped as it was too big for the hatchet head.

The total weight of the completed hatchet is about 700 grams (about 24 ounces).
The weight of the head on its own ia about 550 grams (about 19 ounces).
I know that I am not very good at this , so constructive criticism will be welcomed.
I just hope that the pictures work.
Thanks.
