I would like to buy DMT hones.
What is better for knives sharpening-continuous surface or interrupted surface (polka-dotted)?

Thanks.
Arnis

I have one DMT Diamond Fine stone. It is perforated (polka-dotted). I'm going to be replacing it with the Dia-Sharp continuous surfaces. I've come to notice that my edge towards the tang has a "wavy" pattern when I look at it under the light. And I was wondering why that part was so dull while the middle up to the tip were shaving-sharp. The wavy pattern is exactly the part where the dots are on the sharpener, so that means that that part of my knife hasn't been getting sharpened as much as the rest of the edge!

Some people claim that the dots help because it'll hold the dust so that it doesn't get your edge. I'm willing to get some of that with the continuous surface if it means I can sharpen the base of my edge...

So personally, I think I'm gonna like the continuous surface better.

I have the course, fine and extra fine all in continuous surfaces. I did the same research before I bought and I have no problem with these stones. I am more than happy with my purchase! To me a continuous surface just makes sense. Good luck, M

Continuous surface is best for knife edges. The perforated ones tend to work well with wide, flat surfaces (like say a wood chisel).

I've been using the perforated hones for twenty years with no problems. YMMV.

That doesn't surprise me. I've never really been mainstream or fashionable. ;) :D
