OK,

So, Nalgene makes the Oasis.... http://www.nalgenechoice.com/oasis.html

I have a couple of them, the last generation, that I use to hold fuel, they are made out of PC, so BPA, so no drinkee.....

Well, I 'emailed' them off their site, and told them that they need to do two things.

I told them they needed to change to Tritan, the no BPA plastic. They did this, probably not because of me, but because they were gonna do it anyway. It makes no sense to make water containers out of a plastic that people fear will kill them.

I also told them that they should add another bottle, same body, but with a larger opening.

Here is my thought process....

I love my Nalgenes, wide mouth. I love my mil surp canteen cup, it is really great. Why not combine these two things? Why not a Nalgene bottle, with a wide mouth, that fits in a mil surp canteen cup?

The brits do it, their canteen bottle has a wide mouth.... or at least wider than ours.... http://bestglide.com/natowaterbottle_info.html

But, how useful and practical would it be to combine the form of the mil canteen bottle, with the industry standard of the Nalgene wide mouth?

Seems like a perfect fit to me.

I agree Marion. I think is Nalgene or another company, but there were a few experimental wide-mouth canteens a few years ago; not sure what happened, but it was the same reason as you. I think it makes more sense now...most filter adapters are of the wide-mouth standard and they are much easier to fill from a stream. I actually have two the NATO Canteens for the same reason you mentioned and I carry Nalgene bottles in my deployment kit. The only "USGI" canteen I like is the Echo version that is a soft plastic that you can collapse as you drink so it doesn't slosh, but that's for noise discipline only. I think a new wide-mouth style that still fit the USGI cup/stove and pouches would be a big hit as there are many out there that carried the old canteen…the newer material also doesn’t retain the funky smell that regular USGI canteens do:barf:

MDP, I think you need to contact MilSurp, and ask them if they can source a wide-mouth plastic bottle to fit their canteen cup! :D Har har, just kidding.

I wouldn't be surprsed if Nalgene ends up making the Oasis bottle with their standard wide mouth opening. The Nalgene wide mouth opening has more or less become a standard in the industry. Why not perpetuate that trend? I believe it would become a highly popular item if they did that.

didn't know those existed - very cool

it'd ride a lot better on the hip than a regular nalgene bottle

pair it up with a GI cup and it'd make a great water/boiling system for the belt

The very reason I have one on my daytripping/geocaching setup. I kinda like the smaller opening on the Oasis, I can take a big chug without dribbling it down the front of my shirt. However, I do understand the appeal of the Nalgene wide-mouth and have a number of them.

Nalgene also has the smaller mouth opening bottle or you can buy the screw on adaptor or the no-spill insert to make a large opening smaller for chugging without spilling.
I think you have more options with the large such as putting ice in or mixing up drinks.
I do like the shape of the USGI canteens but for me there are more options with the nalgenes both plastic and SS.

It would be easier to clean with a scrub brush, thats for sure.
