for me I use a 4lb deadblow hammer, this one i got in 2018 (i think it's nearly time to get a replacement seeing the big crack)

I mostly use it in house during winter but occasionally outside when i see a need for it

I use it to split hard firewood when needed or create kindle / starter wood

ofcourse I got an axe when it's needed haha

A wood baton made from small round branch.....Thats why its called batoning, not hammering.....

i do and have used branch when i dont have access to the deadblow hammer

i just dont like using branch when i can for two reasons, rebound and the fact that it got "large" handle

Shear gut determination.

Actually, nothing. I've never needed to baton to find dry wood. In the desert southwest, finding dry wood is not an issue.

Just a wrist size piece of wood generally or whatever I can find laying around in the forest. I only baton now and again for fun though, I grew up heating my house with a wood burner and always have a hatchet around unless backpacking or something.

Batoning is nice though for doing small quick jobs inside next to the fireplace when it's pouring rain or snowing outside though.

I usually just use my Silky saw and saw the head off of my hatchet, then I can use the hatchet handle to baton with. I'm not sure how else I would be able to process wood.

Never really needed to baton but there were a few times on trail I felt I needed to practice it so I made a wedge outta wood and used that to split smaller bits of wood. Learned that from watching a survival channel on youtube.

If I don't have the luxury of making a wedge I'd use my bear and sons western bowie which is my beater trail knife.

if you can get a "cheap" deadblow hammer to try out

the one that i get (4lb) is around 23-30$ CAD

just the fact that it doesnt bounce on hit and with the whole 4lb mass and momentum, let just say that I dont get the same experience with a branch or wood

I should do a new video ... but here is one that I did 4 years ago when i was testing the deadblow hammer with 4 different knives
