What Do You Use Your Bandana/ Hanky For

Wear it all the time playing paintball, keeps the orange and green paint out of my hair.

It can be used as a dust/face mask and also to filter silty water.

I use army 'scrim' (I'm not sure what the real name is- but it's the stuff that you see rambo types wrapping around their heads..). I use it as a scarf if it is cold or it is hot and I am seating. I use it on my head in jungle for cam that doesn't get caught in thorny vines.
I use it in the morning when I wake up and dip the end in my boiling tea water and rub the sleep out of my eyes. I use it to wrap my head in to keep sun off or to keep mosquitos out of my ears. I use it to pisk up my canteen cup when it is boiling hot, I use it to camouflage my pack or any other item if I shoose to leave it behind for a short while- it can be used as a tourniwuet, a sling, etc etc. But hey, that's just me; I never ever wear a bandanna, only scrim.

Do-rag
head band
emergency wrap to keep bandaged area clean
prefilter
wash cloth
container when gathering berries, etc.

I saw some of the German OD triangular bandages in one of the catalogs I get and when I find it, I'm going to get a few of them.

i saw the same bandanas. in the cheaperthandirt catalogue. you can order another one. i get a revised catalogue in teh mail every two months or so. they are big, 44 inches on the long side, OD green, and come 3 for $4. until i order some i cut some large triangles out of an old OD sweatshirt that had a hole in it. it works well.

i use mine simply for keeping my hair under control when out doors (its a pain to get your hair tangled in twigs and stuff). i keep a spare headrag in my pack, along with a bright red bandana. i have used the bandana to mark the spot where i left a couple of saplings i cut for walking sticks at the beggining of a walk in teh woods behind my house. i didn't want to carry them, so i leaned them on a tree and tied the bandana around them. i could see them from a mile away coming back.
i always like to have at least one thing that is bright for signaling, even if not for a rescue (my brother and i sometimes practice evasion etc ninja stuff in teh woods and we need a silent signal)

Thanks for the info. The wife is looking for things to buy me for Christmas and they just became part of it. I have several bandanas that I carry, but I try and stay away from blue and red in this area. In any area for that matter. Gang colors are just asking for trouble. Yellow would be a better choice for me and will be adding a few of them as well. If I could find some silk scarves in woodland type color, I would use those. From what I've read, nothing better for the purposes we use them for.

Ask a group wildland firefighters for a hanky and everybody will have one. They use them as dust masks and to keep sweat from running into their eyes. If they need to deploy their Fire Shelters they dig a little hole in the ground and stick their faces in it so they can breathe. They use the bandanna as a sort of filter so that they wont get dirt and debris in their mouth. They don't wet it because the temp inside these shelters can cause it to steam up and burn their lungs.

i've also used my bandanna to drag out a deer. I tie the ends to the ankles good and tight, the use the center as a handle to drag with. Makes the job easier.

What Longbow said! If you visit California DO NOT wear a red or blue bandana! A couple miles from where I live a tourist was killed while taking a walk. A car load of gangbangers pulled up to the guy and started yelling at him in Spanish and then shot him several times. He died the next day not even knowing what they were yelling at him.

I wear a silk wild rag in the colder times in winter. Doesn't soak up rain water and keeps my neck warm while on horseback. The wild rag is a square of silk. During the summer then it's a BIG cotton triangular bandana. The normal nose blowing size bandana isn't big enough to tie around my head bandit style. To paraphrase the Nuge there are certain things a man should have with him; a knife, a bandana, a large calibre pistol (or rifle), a hat, and a sturdy coat.

I carry and use blue bandannas. And I live in California. I suppose I should rethink that (both the blue bandannas and the living in California thing) but no one has bothered me yet about it.

bulgron-- nice to see more local folks on here...

Hey, cool, someone from my old stomping grounds, more or less. I used to live in Boulder Creek until I fell in love and moved down into the valley. Been trying to get her to move back up the hill ever since.

red and blue is all i own, have a drawer full of them get them at Fleet Farm. For a while I got grief as they were supposed to be gay signs, now they are gang sign, WTF, All i know is I will keep wearing, using, and carrying them. Someone gives me grief, I'll ruin their day.

The khaki and OD colored bandanas don't exude too much of a 'crazy paramilitary' look.

I've been using these: (I think this is what some people were discussing above?)

But also for dedicated headgear, these are nice:

On a hot day, douse em with cool water. Evaporation keeps your gray matter cool.

Oh yeah, the original topic, what can they be used for:
-Fill your bandana with rocks and you got a 'Wilderness Slapjack'
-soak it in water wrap around your neck it will cool your veins by process of evaporation.
