Hi Guys,

Well, I've used knives for years and always looked upon them as just another tool, then I started getting interested and found this site. Now I really know I know nothing about knives.

Anyway I'm ashamed at having to ask but, what on earth does jigged bone or jigged cocobola etc. mean when talking about knife handle material?

I guess it's a process of some sorts but what exactly.

Thanks in advance, and please don't laugh at my expense too much.

Jigging refers to the small slots or dots etc that are carved into the surface of the handle material either to decorate the surface or give a smooth surface more grip.

When I've seen Jigged it almost always refers to bone or antler or other organic material. I don't recall ever having seen Titanium or Micarta referred to as being jigged.

I guess that anything can be jigged but bone is the most common material available to knifemakers that is supplied already jigged. Some of the patterns are quite attractive and the range of colours is wild.

Theere are also different ways to jig, the most common being the traditional looking jigged bone and stag-jigged bone. Its limited only by imagination. Check this out, when I made these, I thought the same thing. Anyone with a dremel tool can do it.

Tony, nobody knows it all, and you don't have to. You just need to know where to look, of course asking on BFC is a good way. I have to admit the first place I look when I'm not sure of a knife related term is AG Russell's Encyclopedia.

Thanks PhilL,

The encyclopedia is fantastic, what a great site for knife information.

Cheers,

Tony
