Greetings,
What type of 0.25" end mill do you recommend to CNC machine G10? My 2F HSS end mill lasted only 36" cutting before it wore it out!

Thanks for your input.

Dennis Paish

CNC IF YOUR NOT USING CARBIDE .... JUST SILLY
hand turning cranks is for HSS cutters and if carbide bits are th4y are not useed to the max

G10 wears out cutters through abrasion very quickly. To maximize your tool life you need to maximize the amount cut per chip and avoid dwelling where you're stewing in abrasive powder. A 1/4" endmill is fed between .001" and .003" per tooth in G10. Stay in that window and you'll get better tool life.

G10 needs carbide, HSS simply wears out too fast. Router bits may do a better job for you than an endmill. We use a mix here, depending on the cut. We also use diamond in G10, depending on the cut.

EDIT:

just went on the bay for 2 minutes. "Poly crystalline diamond" This right here should cut G10 all day for $36 : http://www.ebay.com/itm/SP3-Carbide...hash=item5886662ff5:m:mn2akMeiZ377XlSYizd-UsA

^ I'd at least try something like that

Greetings,
Thanks Nathan. I used the advice of the locale tooling store, but they provided little input. Not used to working with G10. Once you mentioned PCD, you put me onto the right path.

Lloyd, just because it is a CNC does not necessarily require carbide. Aluminum and carbide.... err! There are so many different coatings and solutions, it is hard to stay on top of it all if you are not doing it everyday. Most importantly, it is costly to get it wrong! Tooling is expensive in Canada. That PCD tool above is $36 US and in Calgary is $150 CND.

Dennis

;) got me on that but over all a CNC can run much harder then a guy hand crankng on a mill cause you have much more contol of speeds and feeds. and the mills are often speced for RPMs that work well with carbide (you bring up coatings and for sure they are key). if we are talking AL 3 flute (with angles that are built for high feeds ) are out there but you asked about G10 a high abrasive media to cut i didnt think about nates PCD option as im a hand crank guy

^ yeah there really isn't much place for a HSS endmill on a CNC.
