I need to know what hatchets were used in the Korean War. My Uncle gave my Dad one when he came back during the war. He said it had a slight curve at the bottom of the handle and he used it for kindling every morning. I would like to find one for him as a gift but am not sure which company made them. I was leaning towards Mann and Plumb.

If anyone knows for sure I would greatly appreciate it and a pic would be stellar.

Thanks.

Most of the hatchets used by our military branches are just your common scout type hatchet. Usually they are from Council Tool.

You can look at their hatchet at counciltool.com

Council Tool provides most of the axes to the Forest Service as well.

During the 1940's the issued hatchets were mainly supplied by Mann and Plumb. Those are the most common stampings one sees for that time period.
I'm sure that many of these and existing unissued supplies of these found their way into the 1950's for the Koren (war) Policing Action.

Along with collecting vintage axes, I have been collecting WWII gear and firearms for 20+ years.

A military antiques site called ima-usa.com has US WWII hatchets for sale that are rehafted and supplied with a replicated sheath. The one pictured there is marked "U.S. American Fork & Hoe Co. 1945".

American Fork & Hoe owned Kelly Axe and Tool at that time.

I've got an old hatchet that my great uncle gave me that he used during the Korean War. Mine is only marked U.S.
I've seen others that were marked 'Plumb' with a US stamp also.
I figure that mine was probably made by 'Mann'.

I bought one of those when they were on sale about 6 - 8 months ago, it is stamped:
U.S. American Fork & Hoe Co. 1945. The head has been refurbished and painted black, it has a new haft painted O.D. green and comes with a reproduction canvas sheath printed with Benton Harbor & Tent Co. 1942.
