What does AUS mean or stand for? I thought Annealed Under Stress but I'm not sure if that even makes sense. I don't know what the majority of the letters in Steel names stand for. I know CM is Crucible Metal or CPM Crucible Powdered Metal but what about AUS, VG, ATS, ZDP, etc., I used the search function and Google to no avail. Can anyone help me out?

AUS is an abbreviation for Austenite or Austenitize, the former being a mixture iron and carbon, the latter being the process of forming the austenite by heating it up. I came across AUS in this paper (pdf), a report on something about fracture toughness of steels or something, where it says under one of their graphs or figures that "AUS means austenitize..." I found a definintion of austenitize here which seems to make sense, as we are talking about a corrossion resistant steel. The others, I don't know...maybe I will look around some more and see what I can find.

edited to add more info...CM means Crucible Materials, the company that makes 154CM; it could stand for metal too I guess. CPM=Crucible Particle Metallurgy from this page

AUS, VG, ATS, ZDP, etc. are all company trade name designations. AUS is Aichi steel, VG is also, ATS and ZDP are Hitachi designations. 154 CM was not developed by Crucible it is a trade name and grade from Climax Molybdenyum corporation and Crucible bought the name when they closed many years ago. CM (Climax Molybdenum). Pick up a copy of Stahlshussel through ASM and it will help to define many of the foreign steels and their trade names. Japanese references are tough since they offer very little information on their materials in general.
