For those of you that live in a cold climate, what kind of wool pants are you wearing when woodswalking?

Is it Filson, Woolrich, Codet, or foreign military surplus? If you are wearing surplus please tell me what kind and what made you buy it? was it the weight, the color, the fit?

I have several pairs of wool pants but I am just not happy with them so I am looking for new before the season.

I got some foreign mil surp wool pants from sportsman's guide. They're actually fairly well made, and you can't beat the price for wool.

I was basically looking for something gray, wool, warm, and cheap. There are a few different styles. I wanted something simple and not overly tactical. The ones I ended up going with were officer's uniform pants... 4 pockets, button fly, belt loops.

I've also gotten some at thrift stores. I feel a bit odd about wearing wool dress pants in the field and I haven't put too much stress on them yet, so we'll see how they hold up... but for $5 or less, it's hard to feel too bad about it.

Swedish military surplus - there's a lot of Swedish surplus around these days, I think they must have decided to clear out their warehouses.

For the price they're amazingly good pants - new, well made, and have leather straps at the bottoms cuffs to cinch the pants down and prevent snow from getting in. I bought them for a simple reason - I wear wool pants for the winter and I figure the Swedes have plenty of experience with winter.

I don't usually wear wool pants. Instead I wear fleece pants under my carhartts. They are super warm down into the teens, very light weight and they seem to repel water so even if my carhartts get wet my legs are still warm and dry.

I like Filson myself. The mid-weight whipcord are tough as hell. I save $ by buying them off the bay. Wrong time of year to bid on them now.

I have Johnson wool pants and wool bib overalls. They're plenty warm except for when it's windy... I wish the weave was tighter/harder so they were more windproof.

Anyway, they're good quality for the money.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

PS-- I just checked out their web site. I bought my Johnson stuff many years ago, when the price was much less!

I have a pile of Filson, Woolrich, military surplus, a Cabela's brand, but I always go with the Filson's when I need real durability (I also have the Filson coats, hats, vests, etc). Equally as important (especially when active) is, what is worn under that quality wool. A good combination will keep you warm, dry, and happy. :)

+1 on the base layer...... I forgot to mention that. I wear Hot Chillys for warmth and because I can't stand the wool on my skin.

5.11 Wool BDU when active...Columbia Outfitter wool for hunting...Filson or Cabelas for everyday woods work when I'm not as active.

several years back, I ordered a pair of I believe green Austrian wool mil surp pants. They are very warm, indestructible and were cheap, at I believe $12 the pair.

I have pair of Filson whipcord pants- these are probably the most versatile pants I've ever owned (they are comfortable in a wide range of temps, their tight weave bucks the wind nicely, pretty water resistant and still warm even if a little wet, sturdy build and material)- unfortunately they are the most expensive pants I've ever owned

I'd love to find something that performed as well, for about half the price

I have one pair of the surplus German wool trousers and one pair of the Swedish surplus wool trousers. Gray and gery green in color. Both were bought for 12.00 or so in second hand stores. I use merino wool long underware under them when it is real cold.

Back in the 80's I had a pair of Brit issue wool pants.
They were great.
It's a shame they shrank sooooooo much ;)
