What is it about the BK-18?

........if the tweener handles were longer.

This is real.

Most of my most comfortable knives (like my Doziers) have handles that are in the 4.75" to 5.25" range which are ideal for my medium/large(?) hands.

This is a major point of disdain for me with my Winklers - most are 4 inch handles and, in my opinion: too damned short for a working blade.

A little too much handle length is far easier to deal with than not enough.

With the tweeners, I only have one Official one...… A semi-recent 15.
When I first grabbed it, I was kind disappointed, it didn't live up to the hype (for Me). It didn't feel good in my hand.

I then did my usual treatment of a hardware "swap" and added .05" brass shim/liners to both sides.
It has made a World of difference, and looks Bad Ass.... I still need to make a post.

I might actually keep it now?

Or start selling some brass liners!! I’d be in on a couple sets for sure.

Bet it looks great.

Sort of related/but not. I went to Knife Connection last night and this morning to check out the Architect Slabs, and I can't get it to open.

Zero issues with any other site.

Close to the tipping point on the BK-18!

I keep flip flopping on this one. I do like the looks of it, but I need another 4” knife like I need another hole in my head. Just not sure it’ll get used any more than my 16 does.

That's kind of where I'm at. If I lined up all my knives,
I'd wager half or more are in that general size class.

My thoughts too. I don't know why more knife makers don't make longer handles for the big hand tribe.

Well, it could be any of the following that makes you want one:

Ergonomic handle
Nice pointy tip
Enough blade but not too much
Nice place for your thumb when choking up
Wide blade
Color or color combos
Very versatile sheath that's easy to mod
Made in the USA
Or.......

All of the above.

Wish the other tweeners had sheaths like the 18. I also like the blade shape. The harpoon design does nothing for me but the blade shape itself is great.

I considered it, but I'm a bit bured in knives that I'm holding or expecting in that size, so Ive held off.

I thought you had some rare sprint run of the Adamas in M2 haha, I can't even get a regular D2 Adamas in tan handles here, I'm waiting for them to come back in stock at my regular stor,e can't seem to find a non coated version either they always have black coating which I don't really like.
That's some strong whisky you drink, I've never tried any looks good.

Yup!

Moreover, despite the general market's rebuke of trailing points - evidence the wonderful BK15 and BK5, they work spectacularly for most of what we actually use knives for. They slice, dice, cut, stab, poke, whittle and just about everything and anything we ask of them; they just don't seem to sell in great numbers. The BK18 is a trailing point that doesn't overtly look like a trailing point - almost like the BK15 and BK17 made a baby!

All the tweeners are great, but I really do like the BK18!

Is the BK18 actually a trailing point? I was under the impression that the tip was no higher than the spine, but I don't have one to look at. Sure the 'poon is, but I'd argue that doesn't count.

It does have a lot of the edge sweep of a trailing point, however, as it appears to lack a truly straight section.

re: ancient mariners

This modern mariner prefers a sheepsfoot on a ship. :p
But I sure do like me a harpoon profile too...

That crop is perfect!
Yeah, totally not trailing. I'd say that tip is right about where the 16 and 17 are, but the super long belly gives it a different look and cutting sweep similar to what you often find on a trailing point. Ethan went with a hybrid approach. Pretty cool.

I used the auto crop feature on GIMP. Added the black background, because sometimes, with a white background, the edge gets lost.

it's almost tempting to crop the spine enough to make it straight in-line with the front half of the handle.
I suspect it would do nothing for the handling, because it wouldn't be that much weight, but would change the look significantly.
