What is it about the Victorinox Farmer?

Excellent toolset including a saw that works very well and a great reamer. Heavy duty / bombproof, but still small enough to easily carry in a pocket. Fits nicely in the hand. Not expensive. Great outdoors knife. If you can handle one, see what you think. Guess a few more fans will chime in. Highly recommended!

+1 on what newadventure said. Its just a great compact SAK. If Victorinox made them like scibeer used to, farmer with scissors, that would be awesome.

If the farmer is too big, there is always the pioneer, but the saw on the farmer is great.

I have a LARGE collection of SAKs and my favorite is the Farmer. I like the durabilty of the alox scales, the beefier tools, the stronger backsprings, and I love the handy saw!

I have a bunch of SAKs. All of them but the Classic-sized signature have saws. I have to have a saw. They also have awls, but the awl on the Farmer is mounted on the end instead of the middle. It's also very sharp and effective for drilling holes, starting pilot holes for screws, and for scraping a fire steel. In red, it's beautiful—until it gets scratched and then it has character. It's a very solid knife. It also has reassuring solid feel to it.

I looks good. I feels good. And it works.

Many complain that the lanyard hole thing digs into the palm in use. I filed mine away.

(I also have a Farmer with scissors. Because of the slight thickness difference, the lanyard hole doesn't get in my way—but I'm left handed.)

The way I see it is that the Farmer is based on the traditonal scout pattern, like the original Soldier and Pioneer. The added saw only makes it slightly thicker, yet adds a great tool. I find pairing the Farmer with the Classic/Rambler or a Leatherman Squirt 4 on a keyring works well. That way you get a small blade, scissors, nailfile, and tweezers. This combo covers most bases.

for me, farmer is all about solid reliability, feels good in my hand and the fit and finish is just very very excellent for the price, and so beautiful in my eyes...

for its price, nothing beats it...

but honestly, i also love the classic discontinued alox soldier... it lacks the saw but there's something about the soldier that makes me prefer it than a pioneer... maybe its just the lack of keyring an the soldier and the different logo... get one if you can... maybe i'm the only person who just prefer alox soldier than a pioneer even when they got the same tools hehehe...

the saw is useful if you go outdoors... so the farmer would serve you good.... for EDC, the alox soldier is also a good purchase...

get one... you'll thank us latter hehehe...

ps:be careful, since they're addictive... once you get a silver, you'll want red, blue, orange, green, purple, grey and any available colors hehehe.

OTOH, the key ring attachment is necessary for a belt hanger, which is how I carry almost any SAK/multitool not in a sheath. It is important enough to me that I would rather adjust my grip to the stud than do without.

Perfect toolset for the outdoorsman.
An excellent saw.
Alox scales.
Just the right thickness.
VERY reasonably priced.

Pair a Farmer up with a small prybar and you've got the perfect EDC package.

It is a great pocket knife for both EDC and outdoors. In the woods I pair it up with my Mora. Together, they can do everything I need during a camping trip.

Honestly my farmer was my first SAK and I'll never again purchase another SAK. No need to! this little knife is perfect for me. I've always only carried a dedicated knife and never look/wanted a SAK. Last Christmas I was out to get my Brother In Law a knife (non knife guy) so I settled on a Vic. Farmer and Leatherman Wave... After getting home and handling/admiring both I ended up going out and getting my own.

I have it in the silver alox scales, sharp looking knife, it goes everywhere with me now.

Heavy duty, great scales, and just the right tools for a handy edc.

Also the price is right. You get a lot for a little money.

Farmer is great, but unless you really must have the saw, get an older alox Soldier instead - the Soldier is a true classic. The saw on the Farmer obscures the nail nick on the knife blade, making it harder to open. The Huntsman and other celidor scaled models with saws do not have this problem.

Victorinox Farmer
How do I love thee ? Let me count the ways.....
- Beautiful curves, smooth, thin, sexy
- Alox scales ( blue )
- The best awl out there, sharp, easy to open, larger than previous ones, better location
- Very nice saw, a little on the thin side, but still great
- Heavy duty
- This SAK looks great, feels great, works great
- It's a Vic
Oh yeah, like others said, for the price you pay, to get all that you do, it's hard for anything else to come close to the quality and beauty.

Nope..... Never found that to be a problem. The nail nick is just fine for my usage and my wife calls my finger nails "nubbs" because they are sooo short. It's just about the most perfect SAK out there IMHO. Mine is used for EDC. While at the hunting camp my Farmer is usually accompanied by my RAT Cutlery RC3 but the funny thing is that the Farmer gets used ALOT more even out there in the boonies. I once used it to clean and quarter a doe after I realized I forgot to bring my RC3 with me. It did a great job, quickly and efficiently completing the task. My farmer never gets forgotten or left behind. Y'all take care.
