I've been reading a lot about lock rock on certain knives here on the thread. Which leads to my question-- What is lock rock? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Short answer: it's blade play. Longer answer: it's the blade play that sometimes develops on framelock knives due to wear on the metal and "loosening" of the lock. It is more of a concern on knives with titanium frame locks, as steel won't wear as much. Personally, I've never had much of an issue with lock rock. However, some knives seem more prone to developing it than others.

lock rock is a syptom of having the contact point of the blade and lockbar too close to the pivot. thus the blade can make the lock bar move up and down when wiggled.

Thanks Andrew!

Haha! That's the only answer I was getting on google!

I know this is old but I have a new pt that I can make the lockbar slip a little with a good amount of up and down pressure on the blade. Is that lock rock or is that just typical? It won't slip off and it isn't loose but if I wiggle it hard I can make it move a little. Just wondering if this is something I should be concerned about or not? And if it may just need to wear in or if it will just get worse. In every day use I can't see how this would be a problem but now that I know it's there on my new $300 folder it kind of bothers me but then again I'm kind of ocd when it comes to my stuff.lol

With that being said my zt 0560 will do something similar but I think that is the lockbar moving in towards the cutout because the lockbar is so long. But my sebenza seems to be rock solid so 2 out of 3 framelocks makes me wonder. None show any signs of failure though

My sebenza is the only folder I have that doesn't have any bladeplay whatsoever and I don't have many cheap ones. But anyways I had a serious question. I'm not hear to bash strider or be a crk fanboy. Just want some input on this strider. Hate to send it in already and definately don't want to spend $30+ to do it round trip.

For the record I love this little knife and can't wait to try a sng after I get a conceal carry license and can carry one legally. I just don't want people to think I'm hear to bash Strider. It is a super cool little knife and I honestly don't know if this is even considered lock rock because it takes a good amount of force to make it move. If I hadn't been looking for it after watching some videos I never would of noticed it.

If the knife is open, can you wiggle the blade back and forth easily? If not, I would be satisfied. If it wobbles, and the pivot is tight, send it back.

It doesn't wobble at all. It is tight in every direction but with firm pressure I can get the get the lockbar to move a little bit. The lock bar will move just a little bit towards the lock side (with a little bit of force) but not slip off. Lock-up is around like 40% roughly. I wish I hadn't noticed it cuz now it annoys me a little although in real world use I doubt it would ever effect anything. The one thing that bothers me about it is if I ever decide to trade it or sell it idk if it's something out of the ordinary that I would need to mention and that it could possibly effect value if so. And it's brand new basically. Hasn't cut anything really

dskobli, I think your knife is fine. Some knives resist lock movement better than others, depending on materials or thickness or stiffness of the lock. What you seem to be describing is not a defect, it is only flex in the mechanism, not a tendency towards lock failure at all.

If it does deteriorate after some use, that's the time to consider sending it in. From what I've heard lately, the Strider guys are handling repairs just fine. No worries!

Thanks everyone. I am leaning towards just using it and seeing what happens. I think maybe you guys are right and it's not really lock rock. I think it's fine and my ocd just kicked in when I was looking for something wrong. Thanks again

Dskobli, Email Josh at strider knives and tell him whats happening. If you bought the knife new from a dealer, and it really is lock rock, He'll pay for shipping both ways and fix it up for free. Strider provides excellent customer service, but be forewarned, it can sometimes be a LONG time between emails. The way it happened for me was I contacted josh, he said he'd take care of it and to ship it in... I did, and then sent an email telling him it should have arrived asking for confirmation... and then three weeks later, he emailed me back saying the knife was fixed and headed home.
