I'm still new to Benchmade's iteration development cycles/patterns. The Boost was released last year. Any insight as to the likelihood of a dealer exclusive and usual timing of exclusives? I'm particularly interested a higher grade steel like M390/CPM 20CV/CTS-204P, not that S30V isn't more than capable.

I love the Boost (although I might make my second a manual). However, it's my feeling from comments on this forum that they are not that popular, and so I would doubt that we will see an exclusive. BM, please prove me wrong. :D

In the meantime, I'm really digging the custom Micarta scales Keyman made for mine.

Did your Keyman scales make the Boost handle any thinner? I love the Boost blade shape which is near perfect for my purposes, however some of the turn offs for me are the thick handle and Grivory scales. I understand some 3rd party scales thin the handle and also improve the look considerably. Some may also be turned off by the needless Assist.

If BM released a version with upgraded steel, that would be enough to tip me over into buying it. Then I would spend the money to upgrade the scales to CF, and look into de-assisting it.

I prefer thicker scales. I would think that Keyman could probably thin them out, however I almost never carry my thin handled knives anymore. If you can get your hands on an M390 710 KW's exclusive (discontinued now), you might find that more to your liking. I carry that one occassionally, but it often gets kicked out of pocket by my thicker handled knives.

Because I make my scales one set at a time.
I can make adjustments (where possible) from the original specifications.
Each set i make, is a new project.
I try to do what you want.
If given no direction, I attempt to match original specifications, where & whenever possible. Obviously, different materials have different properties and different model knives have different scale designs. All this needs to be taken into account.

My friend Scott here has canvas Boost scales that are near the same, if not exactly, the same thickness as the factory scales.
Sometimes folks want the same scales just in a different material.
Sometimes folks have something very specific in mind and sometimes folks aren’t sure what they want.
They just know, they want to end up with something special.
Whichever one, or combination of the above it is....I get it.
I’m a knife nut too.

There do seem to be fewer limited editions of some of the assisted models than the non-assisted, but I think there's a good chance if the Barrage is anything to go by.

In addition to the 580-2 and 581 as separate regular production models with upgraded steels and scales, there were a number of limited editions. Some were only color like the blue 580-1002, some were in D2 (comparing with 154cm on the regular here; I know that might not be seen as an upgrade in the current world of S30V/S35VN/XHP being used as the "base" steel by many manufacturers) as with the Cabela's exclusives and 583-1 WARN (also G10 scales there). My memory is also saying there was a 580 with M390 and G10 before the 581 (standard 580 blade grind and everything) but I can't find a source on that with the 581 clogging up all the search results now...I want to say it might've been a Canadian dealer exclusive?

The Mini Barrage also had upgraded blade options, though some of those were technically 586 limiteds, which already had a M390 blade. But I think there was a D2 Cabela's version. Not sure about S30V.

Then the -1601 Volli (sorry, can't remember how many zeroes are in that stupid model number) had a M390 blade upgrade over the standard S30V.

Even the 890 Torrent, which never seemed all that popular to me, had an M390 blade option... albeit in a gold class, it wasn't a crazy expensive one, just some carbon fiber on the handle.

And I'm sure I'm missing others, because I never really kept track of the assisted LEs as much. So as long as the regular Boost keeps selling enough to keep it in production for a few years, I would say your chances are pretty good!

Why use m390/20cv if they only treat it to 58hrc give or take? At that point s30v is more premium and will cut more. They need to raise there m390 etc to 60-62hrc.
