I got a bar of steel from a guy at the flea market last weekend. He said he had gotten it to make knives so I bought it (cheap!)I use 1084 and HT myself,so I dont know if I can even use it.It has a little patina but no rust .I dont even know if it is a stainless steel or a carbon steel.(Or if its a cutlery steel at all)

it's a carbon steel, the one I have comes from Finland a Killionieme puukko supposed to be an excellent steel,if Swedish steel ,they are known to have very 'clean' steels
carbon 1.1-1.25
chrom. .5 -.8
vanad. .07 - .12
nothing else mostly,similar to CruforgeV

I did some research on silver steel some time ago: Silver steel is a tool steel: 1.2210 (old-) or 115CrV3 (new DIN name) It has 1.10-1.25% C; 0.15-0.3% Si; 0.20-0.4% Mn.; max. 0.03% P; max. 0.03% S; 0.5-0.8% Cr. and 0.07-0.12% V. Very similar to Carbon V and 52100. Should be good stuff. Kellam KP-line Tommi puukkos are forged from silver steel, I believe.

Silver Steel is basically drill rod in Europe. It's not stainless. Makes pretty good knives and straight razors.

As mentioned above, it mostly meets Werkstoff 1.2210. There's also a British spec, without the Vanadium, BS1407.

It'll be worth a few minutes on Google, particularly for tempering temperatures, but it should be no problem oil-quenching in typical knife sections:

"Heat uniformly to 770-780°C until heated through. Quench in water. Sizes up to 5/16” dia may be oil hardened from 800-810°C."

Best Silversteel you can get in the US is Boehler k510, BUCORP company, just google it, it is well known in northern Europe, highest class Puukos are made of it, its a very fine grained and pure Steel, gets to HRC 65, but mostly used around 62-63, Rhombic blades made of it cut like the devil and are tough. It is similar to white ( or was it blue??) Paper Steel, european makers claim its better.

Does anyone know of a source for the Boehler K510 in the US? Found some of their other alloys available but not this one.
